My engine is leaking - I need help
Ever since I bought my RS 5 years ago I've had a minor oil leak. Now it's becoming annoying. Every time I stop in the driveway waiting for the garage door to open I end up with oil spots, my driveway will soon become a "dalmatian".
It looks like it's leaking from the front - maybe timing gear gasket and rear seal.
Any ideas how I should fix this? Would additives work? I know some people are against using oil leak stop kind of additives but at this point I can't afford to have the engine pulled and the seals/gaskets replaced.
My garage floor is a total mess, I'd like to put some carpet in there but there is no way under the circumstances.
I use Mobil 1 synthetic, the engine is a a 305 TBI with a 700R4.
Thanks.
D.

signature number2 is best.
you can try a stop leak, but I'd recommend using an oil "dye" type of stuff. buy it, take it home, wash the engine, hose and can of "engine degreaser" should do it. Run the dye in the motor, and see exactly where the leak is. You might be able to fix a simple little one gasket and be done with it. Ie, a valve cover gasket is easier then "pulling the motor"....
and yea, synthetic in an old motor will cause leaks. Get some high mileage normal oil, that's good for that.

It isn't the oil causing the problem. Stick with facts.
You really need to clean up the engine and give it a good look over after a short drive thereafter. Typical leak points are valve cover and intake end gaskets.
I wouldn't recommend oil additives. They work by doing two things: 1) clean built-up residue, and 2) soften seals. Guess what - Mobil 1 does both of those things.

Oh, Signature #1 - it's the only one that is family- and work-friendly (which is a Board rule, remember).

Oops, my bad, I'll change the signature, you've got to admit though, the 2nd one is more fun.
Anyway, back to my oil leak, do you think it's safe to use engine degreaser in my garage/driveway, wouldn't that leave grease stuff on the floor?
Are those degreasers supposed to break up the oil so it doesn't stain? I'm just afraid I'll make a bigger mess on my garage floor.
Any particular oil "dye" you can recommend?
Thanks.

most degreasers break down the oil so it'll clean up easier. Chances are it'll be easier on the driveway too.
You can use TSP on your driveway, i've never had much luck with it, but it's on the package so....
