Oil Pressure Gauge

My oil pressure gauge is maxed out while driving or at idle. The only time it ever moves is when the car is being started. When the car is started it will drop to zero and then shoot right back up to 12:00 or max position. I was wondering if there was a way to test the oil pressure sending unit? I have ruled out the gauge being faulty because I installed a different gauge cluster and the oil pressure gauge gave the same reading as the old cluster did. Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried to replace the sending unit with a new one? If not try that first.

I haven't replaced it yet, but that was my next step. Does anyone have instructions on replacing it?

I have also just started to notice a medium sounding whine/tick noise coming from around the distrubutor area. I cannot pin point the noise and I don't think it's the valve train or the fuel injectors. I can hear it inside the passenger compartment also, but it seems to be coming from the distrubutor area. Can the FPR make noise or maybe the oil sending unit? I have posted this in another catagory.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Does anyone have instructions on replacing it?
Unplug. Unscrew. Re-screw. Re-plug.

Not a big challenge.

Can't comment on the noise, except that it's probably not the oil pressure sending unit.

Thank you. A buddy of mine who is a GM service tech said the ticking noise could be the rotor hitting the cap? Any ideas?

Sounds like the classic oil pressure sending unit wire stuck under the dist. cap making it cockeyed and ticking while grounding out the oil pressure sending unit syndrome.
