check the connection at the starter. If you just got the motor in is possible the cable is loose at the starter soleniod. Take a test light and check for power at the starter. Should have power all the time at the big terminal and only have power at the small terminal when the key is turned to run.

Your supposed to disconnect the battery first! Man, I knew that was going to happen! Be sure to check all your grounds like engine to firewall. Are you getting a click sound or anything? or just nothing.

If you have the V.A.T.S. and it hasn't been disabled, the chip in the key has probably worn down, hence the cars refusal to start. If you have a spare, get it ang give it a turn. If the car starts, get another key cut.

As 89RJcamaroRS said, try your neutral safety switch.
Also, the hatch is weird... on my car, it won't open with the switch with my cluster out (solving a speedo issue).

The same thing happened to me and it was the fusable liks to the starter. They are part of the starter wires that run in a round channel just before they attach to the starter. The channel is steel (genius GM) and if the wires are exposed and touch it they can blow the fusable links. The wires make a 90 degree bend out of the channel and then attach to the starter.

Starting Problems
You might wan't to just go ahead and install a push button start switch.
Oh and another thing, when your car is cold it turns on fine right, but after it get to normal temp, you turn it off and it won't turn on again right it just drag's?
All i did is called Jegs and ordered a CVR high torque mini starter, that solved all my problems. I had installed some Hedman headers on my 86 Transam and they're really close to where the factory starter was at, so I bought a heat sheild and it helped a little but the summer heat just wouldn't help(the factory starter was brand new by the way) so I spent about $175 on a mini starter and that's it and a push button starter where the cigarette lighter goes and 4 years later no problems whatsoever,
As far as your nuetral safety switch , look under your center counsel, by your shifter, your switch should be there.
Thanks,
Eric....

Alrite everybody i tapped it and it turned over and started.................... so now what????????
i followed the purple wire for pretty much as far as i could and there is no sign of a fusible link on the wire so im not sure what to do next????????????????????

So now you get a new starter... simple. I cant belive no one told you to put 12 volts on the signal side of the starter and see if it would turn over or not. Then tap on it. At anyrate when ever you think that it could be a possible starter your suppose to make sure you have 12volts on one side and 12volts switched on the other.
I would get a starter, but the next thing you could do is a voltage drop test on the positive and negitive cable by using a dvom. One lead on the posive side of the starter and the other lead on the positive side of the battery crank it and see if it goes over .5 volt if it does you need new cables or you have a bad connection. Same test on the negitive. If both are under then you know its only the starter. 9 outta 10 times its a bad starter.

When you tapped on it, you freed up the stuck solenoid (or starter motor, I can' remember which). It won't stay freed up forever.

So you think that wa the problem because the solenoid was stuck.............. because after i started it up up by tapping on it............. i tried to start it a few minutes after the normal way by turning the key and it wouldnt so something is still wrong right?????????????????

I have seen this happen before... sometimes the solenoid will stick and when it's free it may never do it again. If you continue to have to 'rap the starter' I would get another one.

well i have just been jumping it from the were the purple wire comes out of my fire wall and so to me it seems as if i was jumping it and its working i would think that the problem would either be my ignition switch or my neutral safety switch.....................

Get a new one, put it in, and if that doesn't help.. then atleast you have a new starter.

well i just dont get it because i disconnected the wiring harness from the neutral safety switch and i have been running a wire with power to the purple wire that is in the harness and my car starts right up every time .................... so i would think that it is my neutral safety switch and no my starter or solenoid.................?????????????

Would get more attention if you start a new thread.
Or do a search ; a multitude of similar problems solved over the years
