oil pan disaster nice headers though

so i had a good weekend overall.

I ripped my bottom end off and replaced the oil pan seal long needed task. while i was at it i did headman headers and y-pipe, new starter and modified the old A/C water pump bracket to make a custom cool looking thing. when i was all done sunday night. Vroom...started up nice burned all the oil off the exhust and engine and took a 5 min test drive. headers made huge difference feels like 50 hp. had major dent in my y-pipe before plus stock manifolds.. anyways this morning i went to drive to work. got 10 miles away and i see a oil trail in the mirror looked like a crop duster flew over. my oil was pumping out of the pan onto my y-pipe.

needless to say i blew the gallon in the motor plus the gallon extra in the trunk. i made it too work on empty oil as i rolled in. who knows what kinda damage i did.

SO how does a oil seal work for 15 miles and then just blow a big freek'in hole.
i hate my car, so sick of fixing it. the day i got it it broke, i got so scammed.

eerrr......

A leaky oil pan gasket wouldn't be pumping oil out that fast.

sounds like a rear main seal to me or you might of cracked the oil pressure sending unit..

if you are loosing oil at the rate you say you are the top 2 ideas and the best to start at

for the rear main seal, pull the inspection cover on the torque converter and look in there, if there is a ton of oil, then your rear main seal is gone

if you look on the driverside inner fender and there is oil all over in there, good chance it is your oil pressure sensor

OR

if your car had the optional oil cooler setup, check all those lines, could of had one of the hoses resting on the headers and it burnt thru all the way after you parked it

and working on your car is rather personanlly rewarding...nothing like saying "I did that"!!

good luck

If you have an engine oil cooler -- that may have been your problem. Same thing happened to me on the way to work several years ago. The engine oil cooler sits above your oil filter. It is held on by a retaining nut and like your oil filter has an o-ring seal. I blew out the o-ring seal. Oil pressure immediately went to zero and I left a trail of oil for a quarter mile. And it smoked like like crazy because the oil drained on the hot exhaust. There is a part that connects the oil cooler to the engine block and that part was apparently cracked. That in turn caused the seal to leak as the o-ring was not able to maintain the oil pressure. It just so happens that I changed to a thicker weight oil (20W-50) just the night before and it was a cool morning. I think the combination of the thicker oil, cooler temperatures and the cracked connector caused the failure. I was lucky to catch the problem immediately, pull over and turn the car off.

The oil cooler lines carry coolant, not oil.

Yup, positive. Assuming we're talking about the factory oil cooler setup, of course.

F-cars carry coolant

Trucks carry oil to a radiator tank immersed cooler.

yup

i think im going to stick it away and save my money, put a 350 in it next year when i take it out. that will fix all the old motor problems that keep hapening. i didn't figure it could be the oil pan. well thanks guys.

on another note i found a nice riced out civic hatchback to drive for the winter. $2k 110k and its not rusted. handles nice. too bad it has a 4" muffler.

our relationships with our 3rd gens in the learning process is a love hate relationship

Untill you know your car intimatly, every bolt and little quirk you will either hate it when it f^%$s up or love it when you unleash the power

you know what even when youve built to many of these cars they will still **** you off with the BS problems that come at the worst time

I forget all about the past while laying down on the road, left hand on the wheel and the right resting on the shifter taking corners at 50

i feel dumb

good news is it's fixed and i .....passed......yea..kinda...my inspection.

I feel really dumb. he said the valve cover gasket slipped out along the back. I had the one cover off when i slipped in the header for that extra little space. well going back on i got the edge of it so it stayed for a bit then the pressure from me doing 5000rpm forced it out. so oil everywhere.

it's the little things that get you.

Not a bad deal though the mechanic looked over everything welded the y-pipe up, fixed a steering link and did my inspection. he also commented on the nice torque and power output from my 305. im assuming he went for a test drive. Big thanks to ANESTHES for getting me a tbi chip
