smoke from oil dipstick
smoke from oil dipstick
got car back from mechanic finally it took him 2 weeks to put in some valve stems. He had to take off ac equipment and jack the motor up. The idiot bent up my oil pan, but all that to the side the care runs fine but I noticed smoke coming from the dipstick. the motor isn't overheating or anything. Just wondering what could be the problem. PCV is working properly.

if this "mechanic" was replacing valve stem seals how the hell did he dent the oil pan? why did he need to jack up the engine? when is he replacing your oil pan?
if it is smoking out the dipstick then it will probably be smoking out the oil filler cap on the valve cover also you just havent noticed yet
so either it is mysterious occurance of blow-by which just happened to coincide with this "mechanic" going shade tree on the cars *** or he screwed up a head gasket...

It's probably steam, not smoke, from condensation building up while it was sitting. And if it is smoke then you want to do a leakdown test, not a compression test. A compression test would tell you absolutely nothing in this case.
I do agree though that there is absolutely no need to jack the motor up to replace valve seals.

yes it could have more severely depending on where the dent is but again there is no reason the engine should have been jacked up for this.

Yeah it's because you don't have a PCV system. Any engine will have a certain amount of blowby. The gasses end up in the crankcase after they're pushed past the rings. Without a PCV system to evacuate the crankcase of these gasses, pressure builds up and will escape through the weakest point which in your case are the breathers. It can get bad enough to where the pressure can actually blow out gaskets. Put a PCV system on it and your problems will disappear as long as the rings aren't totally shot.
