The clamp is the only thing holding it in. With the clamp removed it lifts straight out.

Here's what you do. Take your cap off the old distributor and note which direction the rotor is facing. Put the new one in with the rotor facing the same way. A distributor can only go in two ways, the right way and 180 degrees out. The distributor gear has to line up with the oil pump pickup, youll see the bar going across the bottom of the gear when you take it out, and it should all be clear from there. Just make sure the distributor seats all the way because you may think you have it in right but its not. You'll probably have to do it 3-4 times before you get the gears to mesh right.

EDIT: Also, realize that you only have to loosen the bolt on the clamp and then slide the clamp away from the distributor shaft. You don't have to take the bolt and clamp all the way out. I learned that the hard way back when I first started working on my car, and I wanted to kick myself because it took so long to get that fecking bolt out.

That's assuming that neither the oil pump drive nor the cam have been rotated at all while the distributor was out, and you're reinstalling the same distributor. Otherwise, you might need to turn the oil pump drive to get it to line up.

How do you set the oil pump drive and cam if they have moved?

Re: Distributor Question

One way I have found to line up a messed up dis is to drop dis in hole if it does not perfectly line up and drop all the way to the intake. move one gear tooth, by removing dis slowly, when gear clears turn 45 degress cw and drop. Do this pick turn drop till oil shaft aligns with dis shaft and drops all the way in. If your not at your number one cylinder mark or where ever your mark is, pick and drop again. This will chase the oil shaft around the circle till at the right place. Gear slop wiggle can help this do not force it.
but remember to start 45 degress ccw before the mark as the angle of the gears will advance the pointer as the dis falls into place.

This is a slow way around the circle but will get on the mark.
