I have a 86 camaro with a 305 feedback style carb. My question is on the timing. My repair book say disconnect the black and tan wire first before setting the timing. Well my black and tan wire is already disconnected and taped up.And the connection where it is suppose to go is gone.All that looks like in the repair book is a black cap that the wire goes to.How should I go about setting the time?It runs fine I took the distributor out and put it back in and just want to check the timing because it seems a little doggy like the timing needs to be advanced. First you gotta get a timing light and see what you're at right now. should be 6* BTDC.

 

how do you check it with a advance timing light

 

Hook up the light like you would any other timing light. Then turn the **** to the degree that you're looking to set to. loosen the distributor start up the engine and turn the distributor till the timing marker on the balancer is at 0* BTDC.

 

so can my timing be that off it falls at around 30-43 what the problem

i have the **** at 30-43

 

oooo....way too much. you should have it set at about 6.

 

but i move the distributer back and foward and i can get it closer will it be that the distributer is placed wrong i took it out

 

It doesn't matter which was you put the distributor in as long as the needle in the distributor rotor is pointing at the number 1 plug wire and the engine is at top dead center.

 

it points straight so i move the distributer to the right for it to hit no 1

 

you have to take the distributor cap off to check. make sure the rotor is pointing at the number 1 plug wire. It doesn't matter which way the distributor itself is pointing, just as long as the rotor is pointing at the number 1 plug wire. and from there you have to make sure that your engine is at top dead center. then the timing can be properly set...as long as your balancer and timing tab are indexed correctly.

 

alright ill take everything appart and start from scratch this weekend

 

the whole process, setting up the distributor, getting the engine to TDC, and setting the timing doesn't take long. maybe a half hour if you've done it before. But this is something that you definatly want to get right. getting your timing right will save you gas, get you that little extra HP, and is a lot easier on your engine. good luck, let me know if you need any more help.
