New powersteering gear box ?
I want to take out the powersteering and put in a quick ratio gear box. What would work with a 84 Z28 ?

Maybe you can get lucky like I did. Go to the local U-pull yard and find some 3rd gen. firebird or cam-air-O and turn the steering wheel lock to lock (left to right) 2 1/2 times. That is a (what GM calls sport steering) and you have found a quick steering ratio box. Here in Indiana, it's 10 to 15 bucks for U-pull-it.

Wow I see the email is back working on this site. Answering e-mails sent months ago. I will get you the cap'ns number he does great work. About 25 bucks each way frieght but he will make your stock box anyway you want it. He even put custom stops in mine for the massively wide front tires I have.

OK so 12:1 is considered Quick ratio steering. I believe I have one, but want quicker. I'm setting my 89 up for drifting. So do I want 10:1 or 14:1? Which way do I go?

Re: New powersteering gear box ?
Does the ratio of steering affect the stiffness of thw steering wheel? Because my buddies base model 87 firebird has the steering wheel real easy to turn, stopped or moving. My car, though, I think might have the quick ratio steering. The steering in my car is more responsive, but the wheel is pretty firm to turn.
My last car, FWD monte carlo, was alot easier than the firebird. But my buddies oldsmobile Aurora was the easiest to turn I have ever felt!
I wish I could have the quick ratio steering I guess I have now, but have the wheel only need a finger to turn like the aurora!

Re: New powersteering gear box ?
turn your steering wheel all the way to the left. then turn all the way to the right.if it's a quick ratio it should be 2 1/2 turns to go left to right.
I also found out that 12:1 is as quick as you can get/rebuild to. Higher the number slow it is also.
Mine is hard to turn as well unless moving. it doesn't feel like its a PS problem though. FWD cars I think usually have slower turning cause when traction breaks they jump to the right and are geared so they're easy to correct. Something like that anyways.
