tick tick tick

Alright, the engine has got a ticking noise now and the oil pressure (or at least the gauge) is screwy. First starting it up it is at 45 psi. After about 5 minutes or so it makes it way to 40 and slowly goes all the way down to about 10 psi. (by the way all the psi's at at idle) Yet when I accelerated the psi went back up to 45psi and held until i let off the accelerator.
Now back to the ticking, the 1.6 RR ticked but werent THIS loud. I dont know if its valve tick or lifter tick or something else completely. Suggestions? Symptons or either?

Oh yeah one more thing......the day before i noticed the extra ticking noise, the car cut off on me 3 times at idle while at operating temperature.

Re: tick tick tick

can you rig up a temporary oil pressure gauge? oil pump might be crappin out ? not enough oil gettin to the valve train and ampliflying the ticking ?

Re: tick tick tick

You should get a stethoscope or a piece of garden hose and see if you can isolate where the ticking is coming from. Although the oil pressure could be a bad sign. I am 99% sure I spun a rod bearing, and my symptoms started out just like yours. Pressure starts high, but dips down to 5-10 psi. My ticking was really soft at first, could have been mistaken for an exhaust leak, but now its much worse and sounds like someone is shaking marbles around in a coffee can.

I'd hate to jump to the worse case scenario, but I suggest you start saving money.

i just spun a road bearing on this engine in Dec.....this is the rebuilt. i dont think its the rod bearing. i had massive oil leaks and the sound was different. is 15-20 psi ok for idle?

Re: tick tick tick

People say that 10psi per 1000rpm is sufficient, so for idle, you should be alright. Although that is still too low for my liking, I have always been used to the needle never dropping below 30psi.

You say it is coming from cylinder 1, do you hear the sound better at the top of the cylinder at the head, or down where the crank should be? If it is coming from the top, I would pull the valve covers and see if you have an inner valve spring that has broken, or crank the motor over and see if there are any loose rockers.
