It is a pain. I had everything go wrong and it took over 3 weeks. A big tip is to point the harmonic balancer at the ground, take off the distributer cab, un bolt the windsheild wiper motor, and put the gasket on the engine first, not the pan. And finally take your time. Good Luck!

It's not easy. It took me about 1.5 hours.
You don't need to remove the wiper motor. You only need to raise the engine high enough to slip a 2x4 width-wise in between the clamshell and the motor mount.
And make sure your timing mark is pointed at 6 o'clock.

Why do you think it's leaking?
Has the smog pump been hacked off of it?

Its leaking oil b/c i can see that it is leaking oil. Removing the Smog pump has nothing to do with why its leaking Would it??

Reason being, the upper bolt hole that used to hold the bracket on, goes RIGHT DIRECTLY INTO the passage that the fuel pump drive rod goes through; so since you've evidently hacked the pump off, then if you didn't put a bolt back in that upper hole on the front pass side of the block, you now have this huge funky oil leak out the front of the motor that spews oil all down the right hand side of the engine especially, and LOOKS exactly like the oil pan is leaking.
Try putting a SHORT (½" long) bolt in that hole with a drop of silicone on the threads; then take the car to the car wash, along with a can of engine degreaser like Gunk Engine Bright or the various store brands, that are diesel fuel in a spray can; and clean off the accumulated funk, and see if you fixed it.

Ya know, I'm an idiot and a moron and all; but I'd sure try sticking a bolt in that hole before going to all that other trouble, seeing as how you don't seem to have one in there even though you won't come right out and admit it. And, I'm lazy and stuff like that besides, so even if I was to go ahead and change the pan gasket, I'd FOR SURE rather work on a nice clean motor, than one that's saturated in wet motor oil and dripping no telling how many miles of accumulated goo and funk off into my hair and eyes and mouth the whole time I'm LAYING UP UNDER it.
That job is fun enough as it is, without inviting extra help from the fun gods.

I never removed the bracket that mounts to the block. I have had problems with the pan leaking before I removed the smog pump. i'll pull those bolts out and put silicone on them though.

Yes, Oil Pan gaskets are fun indeed. Seriously - if you are going to... may as well take a good look at the oil pump and feeder tube while you are at it - good cleaning usually can't hurt it. I found one was so gunked up, it was practically closed off. The oil pan's the very worst part of getting to that pump, in my opinion.

Yeah its a pain in the butt. your best bet is check everything else it could be before you go changing the oil pan gasket. But if you must change the oil pan gasket make sure you get the one piece gasket. When i changed mine, i just lifted the engine up and jacked up the tranny a little bit also, it gave a little more room to get the new gasket in.
