Just finished swapping out 2.8 for 327. Have problems
Alright, car is home now. I have the exhaust on. But I am having some problems. Hope someone can help.
1. After riding car for a while and you shut it off. You have to wait for it to cool down before it will start again. Anyone know why?
2. I can start car and pull away like a bat out of hell. For about 100ft. After that seems like some kind of fuel problem. Can barley give it any gas. If you give it gas it bogs out and stalls. ????
I know the timing is not perfect yet. I just got it home with exhaust today. Really happy about that. 3 inch pipe all the way back. Car sounds awesome. Now I just have to work out the bugs but any help would be appreciated.

in your first question does the car not want to crank, or does it not want to fire, what is it exactly doing?

the reason why you have to let it sit before starting it agian ...I am thinking heat soak in the starter . Summit sells a heat chield for that for cheap .

You say 3 in. pipe all the way back, so I'm guessing you have headers? Have you routed your fuel lines away from the headers (as much as you can) to prevent the fuel from boiling?

sorry guys . Here are some details.
1. Yes she is Carb'd now. When it was a 2.8 it was fuel injected.
2. I do have headers and the fuel lines are far away from them. They don't seem to be getting hot.
3. After she has been running for a while and you turn it off it does not want to crank. ( I'm thinking heat shield might do it , but want to explore all possibilities.
Thanks in advance.

yeah the lack of a heat sheild does sound like it may be the problem, check that you "trigger" wire to the solenoid is working though when the car is hot
also what are you using for a fuel pressure regulator?

fuel pressure regulator? I am not. At least I don't think I am lol. You have to bare with me. I put a fuel pump on the engine. The type that opens and allows the gas through found on all carb'd engines. It was still not working so I hooked up the electric fuel pump back up in my tank. Someone is going to have to educate me here.
Put a heat shield by the starter and is working the very best now thanks guys.

What kind of carb do you have? All carbs don't like an excessive fuel pressure. A Holley generally take it better than an Edelbrock, and i don't know how well a Rochester would take it. This could be playing a large part of your "vapor lock" problem.
You could;
You could;
- get a regulator with a return line on it, and forget running the mechanical pump
- or change the sending unit and possibly the entire tank to an earlier model and keep the mechanical pump
- or you might be able to get a "y" for your fuel lines, connect the lines before your mechanical pump, so the pressure before the pump should be nuetral or at least at a very low pressure, the run the output of the two lines to the mechanical pump

Yeah it's a Rochester carb, a pic would be fantastic if you could please.

here is how i would try it, i've never done it or seen it done like this, so if someone sees a problem help make a correction, if your browser doesn't display the jpeg, give me a holler and i'll email it to you
