What cam to use??
What cam should i use guys, i don't want to change my torque converters, but i want to something to help my performance as much as possible for the price. I was looking at the comp cams extrem energy 268, but i don't know. A couple of people recomended me the Lunati 268 Voodoo. WHich one is best. Or is their a better one. I plan on putting holly double pumper carb, weiand intake, and headers, possibly better heads. ANd whats the difference between hydraulic, and hydraulic roller cam? DO they both work in same engine?

With a stock torque converter, 258 is about all you want to do.
How big a double pumper, and which Weiand intake?
Go with a flat tappet cam. Putting a roller in your block would be very, very expensive (a higher stall torque converter makes a lot more sense). You can put a flat tappet cam in a roller block, but going the other way is expensive.

Only 258? Comp Cams info says 268 is okay with stock converter.
I am planning to use a XE268H on my 350 with a 650 DP Holley, Edelbrock Torquer intake, 2460 Hooker headers and ported and polished 416 heads.
Is this combo not going to work well?

A cam acts "bigger" in a smaller engine. The XE268 will probably be fine in a 350, but in a 305 with stock torque converter, it'll be a dog off the line. Even with the 350, it would perform a lot better with 2200-2500 stall.
And a correction: It's XE256, not 258.
And, looking again at the originator's username, looks like a 350 (engine size wasn't stated). So, perhaps the XE268H would be fine. The -14 would be better than the -10 with a stock converter.

-14 means it has a 114 LSA, vs the "normal" 110 LSA that comp grinds onto most of their cams. The 114 would give a smoother idle.
I have the xe268-10, with ported 416's on my 350. I like that combo, but I have a stickshift. It did hurt the low end a bit, makes it feel like a 305. But after 2000RPM it really gets fun.
I also ran the lunati 268 briefly before I wiped it out. It was very similar but more aggressive (on valvetrain). Be careful with that.

Re: What cam to use??
When it lists Hydraulic it usually means hyd. flat tappet. And no you can just use them in the same engine. Most if not all? engines before 1986 were flat tappet engines, the only way to use a hyd. roller cam in it is if you buy a retrofit hyd. roller cam and special lifters and stuff. It usually cost quite a bit to convert it but its usually worth it. So depending on what block you have pre-86 or post 87 can tell you what kind of cam you can use. If you engine is a carbed 350 im willing to bet its a hyd. flat tapped engine.

Re: What cam to use??
the engines out of a 77 monte carlo, for the carb i wanted to go with the 650cfm, and for the intake i wanted the wieand action plus 8121 (good with vortec heads) I am planning on putting vortec heads on but not 100% sure yet, i just want to get all my stuff together before i order, so i know exactly what i am going to use and what its going to cost. Just a quick question, if i were to put vortec heads on, are their any other mods that need to be done, apart from taking intake that works with carb and vortec?

Dont put a 268 cam in a 305 with the stock converter, been there done that. Bogs horibly off the line but screams after 2k or so.
