I tried to fire up my RS, but was greeted by a grinding sound then really slow cranking. I jacked it up and behold the nose cone on the starter was cracked. My question is, How do you get the starter out ? I must be missing something but I just can't get it to drop between the frame and the block. BTW it's a 305. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

I took mine out last friday with a similar problem that a new starter still didnt fix. Anyway, mine was only held in by 2 bolts and i had to disconect the wires to it. After that it just pulled right out.

 

yeah I got mine all unhooked, but it seems like it wont fit out of the openings underneath. It looks like the person before me cut a chunk of the exhaust out to make it clear last time it was changed. I might just cut the weld and go that route. I was making sure there wasn't a trick I was missing.

if you have to then just take the motor mount bolt out and jack up the engine a little

its very easy to

way easier then screwing with the exhaust and welding and stuff

it's got the stock exhaust, It's getting caught between the y-pipe and the frame. I think I'm gonna pull the motor mounty bolt out and jack the motor up. I don't think it's the right starter, it's huge.

 

how about taking the solenoid off of the starter...


if it is huge its the right one...

 

I know the pain you feel on this issue, davey. Randy82's got it right. It kind of only comes out one way. The best way I can describe it is the starter must be vertical to the ground and spun around so that the solenoid will not contact the exhaust. There is plenty of room there to maneuver the starter around before you try and pull it out. The first time I did it, it took like 2 hours before I got it right. I can do it almost at will now on these cars. You should be able to do it without having to jack the engine up. It just takes the right touch. When I put it back in, I literally push it in the only way it will fit and let it rest on the exhaust, then spin it back to the right position. You'll get it and it can be done.

 

KC is right...

IIRC it wants to be nose down, with the solenoid toward the front of the engine.

Be careful: when you get it turned the right way, it will just fall right out; and it's heavy. It hurts if it lands on your face.

 

Well thanks for the help guys,I've tried everything for a while now and it's still not out. I have changed alot of starters but never had this much trouble. There is no room to turn it around even with the motor raised up a little bit. I am starting to think that somewhere along the line something got changed to non stock equipment. I think I'll just have it towed to a garage and they can do it.

 

Well With the motor jacked up, the solenoid off, I managed to get it out and get a new one. Thanks to everyone who gave me tips, Now I just got to get the new one on.
