i have a 1984 camaro z28 with an l69. every time i start it i get a huge cloud of white smoke and then once the idle slows down it still smokes at idle and the more you rev it the more smoke you get. i think it might be my valve seals but should it smoke this bad? i also get a foul odor kinda like a sulfur smell. could there be something unhooked under the hood. i just replaced my passengers side air injector. could i have accidently unhooked something. thanks for all your help.

 

thats not running rich thats burning oil. the sullfur smell is the cat burning up. is the any rattle under your car when you rev it up?

 

Well I always thought that white smoke indacated a blown head gasket??

there used to be a rattle or knock that sounded like the cat but it went away. any other ideas about the smoke.

 

yeah it could also but it would smell like coolant when it was running. if it smells like coolant then oh yeah 100% head gasket.

 

it sound to me like oil check the easy stuff. pcv breather hose oil (not over full) and so on. how many miles do you have?

 

61000 miles,i have an oil leak i think it is the front seal. but i havent ever over filled the oil. by pcv do you mean the pipe coming out of the valve cover into the air cleaner housing.

 

thats the breather the pcv should be on other side going into the carbs base. an 84 with 61k thats awesome but how long did it sit before you got it. if that thing sat for a long time then you could very well have a bad ring or valve seal are that bad.

 

i think it sat for like three years.before i bought it. the engine is in good condition the only real problem i have had is a blown radiator hose. its not a bad car for 2500 dollars .

 

no it's not sounds like a killer deal. did you change the oil before you started driving it? if not the oil is going to like water and that could cause it. also you should have turned the motor by hand before trying to start it after sitting that long.

 

i changed the oil i put in 10w30 castrol. its just really annoying having it smoke really bad everytime i start it. and when i shut it off you can still see smoke coming out of the exhaust for like a minute i dont think it is supposed to do that is it?

 

nope it's not. but i can't tell you why it's smoking that bad with out seeing it. nut if it's smoking after you shut it off then you do have some problems you need to fix soon.

i went out and looked at it again and i notice under the hood while running there is smoke coming out of the transmission dip stick tube and there is a metal tube that goes into the cat and it has been mashed flat in spots??

 

anyone know why i have smoke coming out of my tranny dip stick

 

anyone??? i think it might be serious and i wanna figure it out its bugging me i check the trans fluid and it seems fine i just cant figure out why its smoking
