Problems with your timing or your firing order.

With a timing light, pretty much like you would on anything else.

Re: diesel sounding...

There should only be one bolt holding the distributor clamp down. Loosen it slightly until you can rotate the distributor body, then adjust it as necessary until the timing marks align when you look at them with the light.

Re: diesel sounding...

First, I would make sure you didn't put your distributor in 180* backwards. Make sure all your plug wires are connected both at the plug and at the distributor. Tight connections from the harness to the distributor in back should be checked too. Fuel injector connections too.

To check your timing, unbolt the distrib hold down bolt and unplug the EST. Turn the car on and check timing. Turn the distributor counter clockwise to advance and clockwise to retard. Keep doing that until you get between 6-8 degrees base timing and lock it down. You may wanna reset the IAC and tweek the TPS too.

Re: diesel sounding...

i tired putting the dis in the way it was when i took it out but it would only go in one way, or is there a 180degree spot to?? 2 to spots i can put the dis in ??? so it will seat properly! Thanks AP for your help!! I learned how to adjust timing today woot!! is it hard to twist that body then tighten that bolt back down, i had to use a box wrench to get to that bolt kinda hard to hold the distrib and tighten it ^^

Re: diesel sounding...

If you didn't disturb the position of the distributor rotor or the crankshaft while the distributor was out, then putting it back in the same position is fine.

You can get a distributor wrench at any parts store to make turning the hold-down bolt easier.

Re: diesel sounding...

The distributor rotor has to be pointing in the same direction as it was before you pulled it out.

Re: diesel sounding...

It sounds like you are a cylinder ahead of where you should be. Most definately, the rotor has to be in the exact spot where you left it. Marks on green tape or the firewall or some thing should have been done to note your location.

When you were reinstalling your distrib, you probably were bumping into the oil pump shaft making you think it was not aligned properly. You should have "retarded" the rotor a bit so that when you slid it on, it would rotate clockwise and fall into the exact position. You'll remember the gear on the end of the shaft was curved (for lack of a better word), that means it will not slide directly on, it kind of had to be rotated back into place. Think back to when you took it off, do you remember while you were pulling it out, that the rotor may have moved in one direction? You needed to duplicate that, only in reverse.

Now you need to get the engine set to TDC on the #1 cylinder and start over. I have never had to do that so I cannot tell you how it's done. As much as I hate it when people tell me to do this, you should search and you'll find the correct procedure for realigning everything.
