Any way to build a 302 SBC?

Just wondering if there is a way to build a 302, I dont know were you could get a 3" stroke crank from. I think it would be cool to have something differnt, and they sound frekin insane. Also this would be for a daily driver so and i was thinkin the 302 might get decet mileage?

Or maybe im smokin crack

Re: Any way to build a 302 SBC?

Old 1950's era vehicles with small v8's has 3" stroke cranks.
265 and 283 ci engines used them...
Small journal diameter though on the crank and connecting rod journals.

You'd be better off building a 305 IMO, but the coolness factor plays a big part I suppose...
The sound comes from the huge duration cam, same with the 7000+ powerband.

If all you want is 400 HP, you don't need the expense and annoyance of revving high.

Re: Any way to build a 302 SBC?

The easiest way to build a 302 is to use an 010 block from a 350. Buy a new short stroke, large journal crank. Use the 350's rods (or new ones) and buy 302 pistons.

Finding a junkyard crank to work will be almost impossible unless you find and use a small journal crank.

It will cost the same to build a 350 and you'll get more torque from the 350. Torque is what you feel in your butt when you accelerate off the line.

Re: Any way to build a 302 SBC?

The easiest way to build a 302 is to use a l99 crank and rods with standard 350 pistons. The crank is a one piece rear seal crank. The rods are 5.94 inches long. It also has to be balanced for the 350 pistons.

chevy built a 302 v8 in the 68 or 69 camaro i think it was like a 305 with a 283 crank or maybe a 327 with a 283 crank something like that

Re: Any way to build a 302 SBC?

You can build a 302ci with a 327 or 350block with a 283 crank. If my memory serves me right 283 cranks only came with small-journals unless you decised to get an aftermarket crank. Personally if i were to be building a short-stroke small block i'ld do a 377 (400block with a 350 crank).

NO NEED TO FIND A 4-bolt 400, the factory 2-bolt castings is STRONGER!!!

The block doesn't spin, so I'd say 0 RPM.

The latter. 305 didn't come out until the mid-70's. Last year of the 283 was '67, 307 came out in '68, used large journal 327 crank with 283 bore (but not a 283 block).

All 283 cranks were small journal.

Re: Any way to build a 302 SBC?

If you are serious about a 302, call up Westech Automotive. They built one way back in 2001. There was a write up on it in Motor Trend (Dec '01). The link is no longer good on Westech's site, mostly because of a data loss on their server from what I remember. They tend to let the website just sit because they are busy with cars...and they don't have someone doing their website for them on a regular basis. Here is their site..like I said, a bit out of date www.westechauto.com and here is some other stuff I found on the car: http://www.enjoythedrive.com/content...lt.asp?id=8770

And I know it is a 4th gen, but people do LSx swaps all the time...and I am sure Norm can get it done with a 3rd gen block.

If you have a one-piece rear main seal 350 block, you can get a baby LT1 crank and put it in. You'll need 302 pistons if you use standard 5.7" rods.

This is, of course, still just a 302 when you get done.

FWIW Lunati makes a 3" stroke crank.

the 305 didnt exist in 68-69, it wasnt until about 1975 that GM introduced the 305. and it wasnt a performance engine at all when it first came out. it was an emissions/fuel economy engine. the 305 made modest power as the LB9 used late third gen fbody. the 302 was a performance engine. the 302 was a short stroke average bore engine.this also gave it higher revs. the 305 is a normal 350 stroke with a small bore. a stock 305 cannot rev any higher than a 350, but runs shorter on power becuase they have a smaller combustion chamber.

Well, pass that pipe!
If you like the sound of a "high-reving" motor you should just build a 7000 rpm 350 and tell everyone it's a 302.
Plus, it won't be a total dog under 3000 rpm.
Any engine that makes power above 6K RPM is not going to get good mileage in the city.
...or you could build a 383 like everybody else.

Re: Any way to build a 302 SBC?

My 302 tpi got better gas mileage and had more power than any 305 I had. It would out run my mild 350 tpi. The tpi can not flow the air for a 350, but works great with a 302. 305s have small bores and can not breath. My l99 crank weight 42 pounds and I only use 6.75" balancer. The stock 350 crank I had, weighted 53 pound. I saves 12 pounds from the balancer and crank. The 5.94 rods give a rod to stock ratio of 1.95. 350s has too low of a rod to stroke ratio to begin with, 383 with 5.7 and 5.565 are crazy. The motor spin easy. Low friction and less rotating mass. It spins easy to 6500. The tpi intake help with the torque. The motor would not run right if carburated. Any 170cc heads work great and you can the stock injectors. 383s have more power, more friction, more heat, and cost much more to build. Small base circle cams, 6 inches h rods, and grinding the block, isn't boosting a 350 cheaper? It always a good idea to grind half the rod bolts off to clear the cam. 3.48 is the limit gen1 or 2 small block. 355 or 377 if you don't mine the steam holes. The ls1 fixed the rod and cam clearance problem. If you waste the money to build a 383 or 406, you are better off going ls1 in the long run. When the prices fall, 408 and 421 will be the hot setup. The extra .25 inches of deck height will help keep the rings out of the pin hole. Too bad Chevy did not make a tall deck truck small block. Rocket blocks cost too much and have few options for intakes. This is where the 360 or 351w has an advantage.

Not completely on the pipe, just a couple decades out of date.
