Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
My 92 camaro rs is running very rough at all speeds and all temperatures. It also tries to cut out on me in gear at a stop. It has a 305 TBI with all new parts in the ignition. I'm using Autolite plugs. I look at my plugs and they are black and when I rev the motor a blackish greyish cloud comes out of the exaust smelling like gas. I'm using 87 octane fuel with Gamout fuel injector cleaner in it but it doesn't seem to be helping at all. The problems worsen as the motor warms up. I've been looking and seen that some had bad coolant temp sensors causeing the same problems I have (Low power, stuttering, engine shaking reguarly, rich smell in exaust). Also I noticed people recommending ac delco spark plugs, non-platinum. What other things could be causing this rich condition? And what about the spark plugs and coolant temp sensor?

Make sure someone hasn't taken the bulb out and check your stored codes.
Any good auto parts store will check them for free.
Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
I've done a diagnostic on it grounding the aldl ab with a jumper and pulled the codes. None except for #23 MAT sensor which was from where I warmed it up doing the valve adjustment and did'nt have the air cleaner on and the #12 check code. Plus the light Blinks when I crank the car.

Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
It's probably not the spark plugs. My shot in the dark guess would be an injector problem, because it has the poor running condition regardless of open/closed loop operation.

See if the ECM thinks the air coming into the engine is -40 degrees.
This will make it run really RICH!
Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
Well I can see the injectors on top of the throttle body and when I rev the motor with the air cleaner off I can see a big cloud of fuel spraying down into the throttle body. Now I have removed the injectors from the housing and cleaned them with carb cleaner because at first one injector was dripping and the other did nothing trying to crank the car. After I cleaned them they sprayed in a nice cone and both spray the same. Should I unplug one of them and see what happens? Also I ask about the spark plugs because in other articles new plugs would turn black quick unless they were AC Delco, and a coolant temp sensor would also cause a rich condition so I wanted to know about that. Other than sight I don't have any real way to test my injectors but they are spraying good.
Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
When I put the air cleaner back on a plugged it all back up the code cleared. Also How can I check the sensor without a scanner? Should it be giving a certain voltage reading? The only real testing I can do is VOHM electrical testing and free code scan at advanced auto parts. Would that free scan tell me or just give me the codes? I should probably call them. Could there be something wromg with my computer or a ground wire on the computer because I don't think the computer is supposed to clear itself because I haven't disconnected the battery to clear any codes, they cleared themselves after the problem was solved. When I fiddled with the EST bypass connector to set the base timing it gave me a code but as soon as I plugged it back in it cleared itself and the code went away. The only code I can get at this moment in time is #12 check code.

Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
Drive it on the highway enough to clear the plugs and see if that made a difference.
Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
I've put about 200 miles on it since I got it running and about 100 of those are on the highway. I put some injector cleaner in it and warmed it up and it seemed a little worse. I drove the car about one mile since I've added the cleaner but it shakes and sputters so bad that I don't want to take it too far from the house yet in case I need someone to help me get it back. The plugs were brand new when I put them in and have been cleaned once already about 100 miles ago. The last thing I've replaced was the coil and it made a big diffrence at idle(As far as exaust smell) but still runs like crap through the whole RPM range. Also once the car warms up and I put it in gear now the idle drops to about 500-550 and sometimes as low as 400. I'm realy trying to get this car close to perfect because my other vehicle is falling apart faster than I can keep it up because it's so old and all the parts on that one are on their last leg.

Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
I've found that adding things to my engine was not liked. I added Gumout fuel-system cleaner and my car ran like absolute crap. It misfired a ton and was terrible - and also confused me on what was wrong. Run that tank town and fill up and see what happens.
Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
It was running this way before I put the cleaner in it but all the cleaner seems to be doing is amplifying my problems. Any thoughts on AC delco plugs or the coolant tempsensor? Those questions still lurk in my mind.

I'm pretty sure it's not the plugs (though you could check to see if they're fouled - but I doubt it - check the wires as well). That coolant sensor sounds like it could be doing it.
But that just doesn't seem correct.

Re: Rich Fuel, How to FIX???
I unplugged and ohmed the sensor. Then I warmed the engine up and ohmed it later it was much less. I went to adjust my IAC but noticed that with my key on the IAC clicked 2 times a second or so (engine off). Is this a sign of a bad IAC or is is supposed to do this? Also as the engine warms up the idle is jumpy. After I reset the computer the car is hard to start and pops are heard from the exaust. It seems I'm getting worse off than before.
