Car Isn't Running Correctly, Distributor/Timing? im stumped!
Alright guys. Disregard the last thread I made.. Im concerned with the distributor. I believe that the LG4 (305 4BBL) Rotor was supposed to face straight to the front of the car, and the distributor plate (where the 2 plugs go) facing the steering wheel. When I went out to look at its position, the rotor was facing the passenger side valve covers, which cant be right. When I started the car before this, it was jumping and sputtering.. I tried to find a spot where it would fall back into place in the correct spot, But I just couldnt get it to go down. It fell in with the rotor facing straight but somewhat to the right (view standing in front of the car) but the distributor had about a 1/4" lift from the bottom. Car wouldnt start in that position. Any help? Im not sure where the rotor should be facing.

take out the distrib run #1 cyclinder all the way up on a compression stroke put your distrib back in with the rotor pointing to #1 make sure it is setting all the way down shouldn't stick up should be all the way down flush with the block

pull #1 plug out bump your starter until u hear air come out the spark plug hole slowly bump the starter till the piston is all the way up

Alright, So I take out the #1 Spark plug. Do I turn the ignition to 'bump' the starter? (I think this is what your talking about) Thanks again

Last question, when im putting the distributor in should it be facing #1? Or is that going to be where its facing once it's in all the way. Thanks for your help man.

The rotor will be at #1 when the #1 and #6 pistons are at top dead center for one rotation of the crank, and at #6 when the #1 and #6 pistons are at top dead center for the next rotation of the crank. Or vice versa.
The distributor goes around once for every two rotations of the crank.

So do you think that the distributor was in the right spot after all? and maybe I have to figure out a different reason why my car is jumpy? Thanks

If it runs, it's at least close.
Not sure what "jumpy" means. A regular miss? A surging with no change of throttle?
How long since a thorough tune-up? Timing properly adjusted? Carb adjustments done properly? SES light coming on while running?

I did a tune up last year, so that should be fine. The car ran perfect before I began the intake installation. Jumpy: I started the car and held the RPMs up a bit to try and let it warm up, then I jumped out to watch the engine (first few starts since intake was finished) Everything looked decent, it was shaking a little.. and then I heard the exhaust making popping noises, so I shut the car off. Only difference in this intake is that it doesnt have an EGR.

Step #1 is to go over everything you last did. Crossed spark plug wires is a likely suspect.
