What can I remove to make it cleaner? Things like cruise control and stuff that I do not need

 

Dude I've whored out his picture more than anything. There are alot of things you can pull out to make it cleaner. it just depends on how far you want to go. Tell me and I mught be able to help. Yes my car is still TBI

 

I would like to remove as much as I can but I don't know what exactly everything is.

 

Is this your daily driver? If so you may not want to remove too much. I would relocate your alarm horn under the front of the car, the white wire you have going across the engine and any other random wires. Follow another wire going to that point or create your own line going across the firewall and then up to whatever it connects to.. Basic " L " format will always look clean and factory. Other then that looks like you need some simple green and a tooth brush, and get some new coolant and washer tanks.

If this is not a daily driver you can get rid of the A/C, heater control valve, heater box,and smog equipment (ck your local laws). You can also get rid of the washer fluid container, and replace the overflow tank with a catch can.

 

The white wire is actually for the aftermarket temp gauge that I didn't put in yet it's close lol. I don't want to use it as a daily driven car so I want to remove a lot. What can I do about all the EGR stuff?

 

The EGR stuff, if it's working properly leave it. it really doesn't hurt power but if you're like me and no matter what you can do and it doesn't work take it off and throw it as far away from you as possible. Just know that if you do remove it burn a new chip to remove the EGR settings from your computer. Do you have emissions testing where you live? If you do there isn't much you can do to clean up your engine bay. The smog police will get you. Do you need or want to keep your A/C? What are your total plans for the car? We can't really help without those questions answered.

We do have emissions testing. I live in Pennsylvania but I really don't care. I would like to remove most of it. How would I go about burning the chip?

 

Here's a quick list of the things I've done to my engine bay. The things removed are......
A/C
A/C and Heater box
Heater valve and Heater hose
EGR
Washer bottle
Wipers
Cruise Control
Horn

The things I've done to clean it up are......
Gutted and rerouted ALL wires
Smaller coolant bottle and hidden in front of the radiator
Homemade battery relocation
March Brackets and pullies.

So that's pretty much it for the most part. To answer your question Robster I had a chip burned for me by tbichips.com. It's Definately not a perfect tune but all I wanted really was the egr removed, and the car is still pretty drivable. When I get my taxes I'm getting the EBL flash and a Zeitrnix wideband to PROPERLY tune the car, it really needs it. If anybody needs some more help don't hesitate to ask.

 

What do I need to all take out for cruise control? What is all a part of it? If I take it out will my computer give me errors? Could I take out the A/C without taking out the heat?

 

Also look at all these hoses and that black box.. I don't want that there lol

 

That "black box" is the A.I.R. diverter valve. If they do a visual equipment inspection during your emissions test, it won't pass without it (unless, for whatever reason, they don't look for it in your area). If you remove it, you'll basically have to remove the A.I.R. system, which will make it less likely to pass a sniffer test (assuming they don't do visual under the hood).

What you circled looks more like the heater shut-off valve. You can eliminate that, as long as you don't mind your max AC not working quite as well as it might.

You can't take out the computer. It runs your TBI. To take out the cruise control, you would take out the cruise control and its hoses, wiring, and cable.

Ditto the previous alarm comment.

Personally, I'd remove the yellow spark plug wires - stand out too much.

And, I'd remove the rust. . .

 

Just get sandpaper to the surface rust on the engine? I might get a shower now and go outside to do a lot of stuff but it's pretty chilly = D. I should be able to pass inspection fine I just don't want to mess anything up.

 

Which brackets did you use? I've sorta looked at the kits but they seem to have a lot. I'd like to at some point upgrade my brackets and use stock sized pulleys. I ditched the 88+ serp set up for the basic Alt / water pump / power steering since that's all I use anyway.

March set 22023. Just know that these kits ARE NOT designed for 88 and up vehicles with a reverse rotation water pump. I had to get a standard rotation pump to compensate. Also when ordering the kit, try to get on with a press-on p/s pulley. If not you get the keyway style. I had to get a P/S pump for a 71 impala to use the pulley. You can remove the A/C without removing the heater. You have to get a 1LE A/C delete box and a blower fan that matches it. The stock fan is too deep to use. it will hit the firewall.

 

the heater core isn't in the engine compartment. it is between the firewall and your dash.

 

Could I take out the AC and just not have air conditioning but still have heating?

 

Just switch it out to the same set-up the non-AC equipped rides have.

Regarding removing items from the engine bay, I've also seen some that relocate the brake booster and master cylinder. That really cleans things up. You can get kits that mount it under the body (simpler) or for really low rides, even in the trunk. These kits are also used extensivley by hot-rodders and resto-modders. Make the ride look really trick and clean.

no I don't have heat. If you read the other posts I mentioned what you need to do as far as chip tuning. Plus if you guys read a few posts up I also mention The A/C situation.

I say get rid of the heat completely. Lets face it none of these cars are good winter drivers and without it you remove all those UGLY hoses and the box. My only regret with my car was leaving the winsheild wiper motor......Why is it so much bigger than any other car. I hate it but i was scared to get rid of it. I have a complete TPI setup from a 90 L98 if you are interested heads and everything. Go take a look.

well i would get rid of the heat but iam in the military so i move around overseas alot, and its cold over in europe and japan, and it would be nice to have some kind of heat source, plus i need the defroster, i bought the car while i was in germany didnt plan on driving it in the winter until i crashed my beamer while drifting

 

I lived in PA for many years and drove a 1984 Monte Carlo that was used only for shows, cruises and Sunday Drives. At the time I was in PA, if you drove less than 5K/year, you could get an exemption for emmisions inspection. My Monte passed all safety inspections just fine and the emmisions exemption allowed me to run the car like I WANTED TO.

 

I rank up 5k miles like it's nothing and I would really like to have the heat. I am about to take out cruise control right now I took out the windshield washer container.

 

you can get a little under the dash heater. plenty of room under there.

 

I got the plug and play hookup kit when I got my MSD box so I didn't have to cut or splice anything together. So hooking up my MSD box was a breeze. "Worth the Money" maybe, the cars seems to pull alittle better in the upper rpms. I don't know as of yet how much power my car has. I know I can take a 06 Mudstain GT 5 spd by 2 cars if that can tell you anything. I haven't been able to take it 2 a dyno or run it down the track yet. I know once I get my tuning stuff I'm going to make a run to Vegas for a test and tune and tune the car up right.

 

Thanks. Yeah I had already switched over to the 87 style and have the standard rotation pump. I never liked the big bulky 88+ style of brackets especially when deleting the A/C and A.I.R.

 

Heres mine, still a bit of a work in progress. Out of the three cars ive owned, the third gen is the absolute worse/most difficult car for creating a visually pleasing engine bay. This is atleast 30 hours of work over the course of a year, SOLELY dedicated to cleaning up the engine bay. Heres a few tips i found work.

1) If your engine has any chrome, or is brightly coloured like mine, paint the engine bay black. Its hard to get the effect in the pix, because the black paint is reflecting. Its a semi gloss, that will turn flat over time. This makes the engine the point of focus.

2) Removal is probably the easiest way to clean up the engine bay, but sometimes you just cant remove EVERYTHING. So instead of looking at it as "removal", look at it as "relocating". Push wires out of the way as much as possible, and stick them behind stuff. Like most of my wires are hidden around the distributor, where you wouldnt normally be able to see. The huge loom of wires going OVER the brake booster, are now UNDER the brake booster, etc.. etc...

3) Spend the most time trying to have your intake manifold, and your valve covers exposed as much as possible. These two things are the main focus when a hood is opened, so if THEY are all you see completely, it makes it visually pleasing.

4) Hoses, (namingly heater hoses), should be as short as possible, and run parallel to other long straight objects. If you notice in my pics, they are running along side the valve covers, so they dont stick out like a sore thumb. I had to run the second heater hose to the driver's side of the car, and i used $0.80 90* fittings, to run it behind the carb, and make it look nice.

5) I did the same thing that i did in step #4 to the wires, running from the alternator. I put them in that plastic hose cover thing, and ran it along the valve cover. For some reason, when you run wires or hoses "parallel" to other fixed engine objects like the valve covers, it makes them hard to notice at a first glance.

I still have alot of work to do, but its coming along. Next i will probably see, which wires are going to where on the engine, and push the rest of them, INTO the interior compartment as much as possible.
