socket for headbolt too big. help?
Installing my edelbrock heads, one of the corner nuts (im running studs) threads on fine but my socket is too big to fit over the nut, the casting of the head did not give me enough room to get a socket down there. anyone run into this before? I've tried my all trade 6 point and craftsman 12point socket

Try a 12 point nut? Which Edelbrock heads do you have?

A 12 point nut would let you use a smaller socket. I don't know if they sell them separately, might want to contact ARP and ask.

Take the head off and grind a bit of clearance?

No, the nut will be the same diameter, but the socket will be smaller.

Right, because you've got 6 point nuts. 134-4001, right? You need a 12 point nut in the corners.

Re: socket for headbolt too big. help?
A 12 pt nut might require a 9/16 socket instead of the 5/8" socket. I would go to your favorite nut & bolt store and see if they have a smaller nut (12 pt or even 6 pt) having the same stud thread.

Are you using 1/2 drive sockets or 3/8 ? Impact sockets or chrome?
I think the thinnest wall socket is 3/8 chrome.

Re: socket for headbolt too big. help?
hey traviz, go to sears ,they have thin wall sockets just for tight places like this. what aperion is saying is they make nuts that have the same size hole in the center, but a smaller size on the outside, this way you can use a smaller socket.later jimmy

Thank you for the tip and the clarification 1fastam. I did look around today at a few places, but seems 12 point nuts don't exist. I will check out sears tomorrow for this awesome socket

Re: socket for headbolt too big. help?
I had the same problem with my AFR Heads and with arp 12 point 1/2 inch socket head.
I was using sears 3/8 drive socket and it was binding on the valve spring shims on the corner bolt up front.
I turned the socket down about .030 and it fit fine.
