Re: haha i'm an idiot!!

now i need to plan some exhaust, all i have on it are the stock manifolds. I want some longtube headers, anybody know where to get cheap ones?

Ah, you mean the ones you don't pay much to buy, but pay through the nose to install - right?

Re: haha i'm an idiot!!

The Hedman 68460 are popular. I got a set.

Judging by hte sticky in the Exhaust board, the Hooker long tubes that are 3 times as expensive are even more of a pain in the butt to install.

Re: haha i'm an idiot!!

well, i guess i should have bought the longtubes before i installed the engine, but since i didn't, i gues i'll go with shorties cuz i don't feel like goin to the trouble of longtubes. Summit has some nice shortys for 90 bux.

Those are exactly the ones I was talking about. They aren't "nice", to start with, they're "cheap". Small 1-1/2" primaries to boot. And, unless you have free access to exhaust tubing material, bending equipment, and welding equipment, an exhaust shop (and especially a "muffler shop") is going to charge you more to hook them up to an exhaust than it would cost you to buy headers and y-pipe that you can bolt up to the proper exhaust.

I don't know what you've got for the rest of the exhaust, nor exactly what you've got for a engine, but the chances of the aforementioned Hedmans & corresponding y-pipe, or Hooker 2055HKR headers being the best and least expensive route are much higher than the chances of those cheap Summit (aka, Flowtech) headers being the way to go.

The chance of longtubes being the way to go is even lower.

Understand, I'm not trying to put you down, I'm just trying to save you from yourself.

Re: haha i'm an idiot!!

oh no, i don't think your putting me down at all. I appreciate your input. I got a set of summit shorties on my truck and i love em. It's just a rebuilt 350 so i'm not worried about a lot of performance loss. I just want something other than the crappy stock manifolds, and i ditched my stock exhaust. I got a couple friends at the muffler shop who do anything for a six pack!!

Pacesetter and Flowtech headers for trucks (and even 4th gens) are, for whatever reason, much better than what they make for 3rd gens.

If you can get the install done for beer, then the Hedmans are probably the way to go. The y-pipe isn't as good as the Hookers, but if it's just a mild rebuild and you aren't concerned about future performance upgrades, they'll be fine.

The y-pipe is really the key. Your friends probably aren't going to do mandrel bends for you, and at least until you get to the cat location, it's pretty important to have that. Even on a "mild" 350. Besides, snaking a y-pipe around properly probably isn't something you want done by someone who accepts payment in beer. . .

Re: haha i'm an idiot!!

Naw man, these guys are good. I go to them for everything. The exhaust shop is only half of the garage. They do everything from heater cores to changing tires. Plus, i've done a lot of stuff for beer....
