Automatic tranny and engine timing...

I am looking to by a firebird but the guy thats selling it said something to me that concerned me. He said that when the motor shifts it squeals the tired unconditionally. He said it was because of a timeing issue between the motor and the tranny. Its a 1991 firebird with a 305. It originally had TPI but the last owner switched it over to a full carburated setup? Why would you want to do that and is this whats screwing up the shiftpoints?

He said it was a really easy fix and a simple diagnostics test would solve it buy it seems more concerning to me than just a diagnostic computer problem

I'm thinking it sounds more like the last owner might have put a shift kit in it and maybe it's hitting real hard and squealing the tires.

im not really keen on the 700r4 but i didnt think it was "computer controlled" except for the OD lock up so it wouldnt be a "computer" problem right? someone correct me if im wrong. i agree with danandamy on this, its probably a shift kit. i mean the previous owner did switch it to carb so he must have been tinkering with it some so it wouldnt surprise me.

Re: Automatic tranny and engine timing...

You are correct.

The 700R4 is not a computer controlled transmission.

Most likely a shift kit or he used the wrong TV cable for the carb conversion.

Re: Automatic tranny and engine timing...

I just talked to a local camaro owner and he said when the previous owner installed the distributor he left time timing a little too hot and if I retard the timing a little bit it would stop the problem...

Is this true?

wont hurt to check the timing, But I dont see how it can cause shifting problems.

Re: Automatic tranny and engine timing...

the only way to "fix" a tranny with a shift kit would be to remove it

Re: Automatic tranny and engine timing...

Really though, check the TV cable. Any tranny shop should be able to check it for you. If he converted to carb and didnt change the cable or used the wrong one it could be causing your shifting problems.
