Dumb Cam Question...
It is a dumb question...but, what happens if you were to use a hydraulic flat tapet cam with hudraulic roller lifters? The reason I ask is because I am gonna get a custom a camshaft and the specs seem more symilar to that of a flat tappet cam, the adv. duration and the duration at .05 are a lot closer to each ther than in any roller cam I could find...would it be different being that it is gonna be made for roller lifter and still have specs similar to a flat tappet cam?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Dumb Cam Question...
Nothing much... it'll just trash the cam and fill the motor up with metal chips, which will destroy the main & rod bearings. No big deal.
I'm not sure what you're saying about "specs" being more like a flat-tappet than a roller-tappet design?
What sort of a cam are you looking for? What motor is it going in? What will it be used for?

Re: Dumb Cam Question...
Flat cams are ground with an angle across lobe flat to push cam to the rear and rotate the flat lifters (they are not flat but crowned, if flat they need replaced).
Rollers don't, they need a button on cam cover to keep them from walking away from lifters.
Rollers have very steep ramps compared to flat.
like DD'S vs A's not all 44's are the same, could have same height, weight, and waist.

Oh...I did not know that...well its a roller cam I am thinking about getting made custom...its going into a fuel injected 305...the specs are 262/276 adv dur. and 224/236 @.05, 104 intake centerline and 116 LSA...thats why I thought it was more similar to a flat tappet...but i didnt know about the actual lobes being different...

And like the DD's, look good in the Mag's but real world....
You just can't look at one thing. Everything has to be considered.
What looks pretty isn't always what you can live with everyday.
What you need and what you want are not always the same thing.
What's that old saying?
"If it has "T..."s or Tires on it, you going to have trouble with it"
You know, high maintenance and you got to know how to treat them.

Also, a cam that size, especially if its a roller cam, will probably have more valve lift than stock heads can work with - the mechanical limit of the heads, like when valvetrain parts start crashing together, is around .470" lift or so. The heads can be modified for more lift (around .550" or so) by a machine shop though, if necessary.
What engine mods have you done already? Were you planning to do any at the same time as the cam? A cam that size could be used in a 305, but to really get any benefit out of it, you would have to have a set of headers and 3" exhaust, and either install some aftermarket performance heads (Trickflow makes a very nice set of aluminum ones for the 305 and other small bore chevys) or have your stock heads ported. That would be about the very minimum to really support a cam like that.
If you want to upgrade the cam and don't really want to change everything else, I'd reccomend using one of the factory '93-97 LT1 F-body cams. There were various changes to specs over the 4 year run of the LT1, but they all behaved pretty similarly. The '97 LT1 cam was the biggest though. I still have the stock cam in my '97 Z28 and I'm fairly happy with it. Makes plenty of power and torque from idle to 5000 rpm, but the meat of the torque is right in the 2000-3500 range, which is really nice on the street. Thats in a 350ci engine though, the powerband would be a little bit higher in the rpm range with the smaller 305ci you have. It sounds pretty nice too - no rough 'race car' idle, but it does have a really nice mellow rumble to it.
I think you'd be very happy with an LT1 cam in your 305. It would also play nice with the computer too, as it was designed to be a fuel injection friendly cam.

Do you happen to have any specs on your stock cam lift dur lsa cl?
Found everything but intake installed center line.
