What heads to use

I am getting 350 thats bored .030 over soon, trading my broke down bronco 2 for it, its a long block with the heads off and has low miles. i didnt get the casting number but im pretty sure the heads are just useless junk. what heads should i look into to have a pump gas motor, not high compression. the block has flat top pistons with 4 valve reliefs. please help. i've looked into vortecs also, i just need to know what heads and what size head gasket i need. im not sure if the block is zero decked.

Re: What heads to use

long block with the heads off
= a short block

Vortecs would probably be be as good as anything, and better than most. Especially if this will be carbed or TBI. If it's TPI, the heads plus the "special" base runs into some $$$$.

The correct size head gasket would be one for a SBC. FelPro 1004, or a HS7733PT2 set, work great.

A suitable cam would be the Comp XE series, or the Lunati Voodoo series, or some of the more aggresive Crane or Isky or Crower ones. Make sure you get the Vortecs that have been "upgraded" for more lift, since in stock trim, about all you can reliably use, is around .465". If it's a roller cam motor, take that into account when selecting a cam.

Which one you get depends upon what you intend to use the car for. If street performance, some track maybe, this one would be a decent choice http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD806...RPMAirGap.aspx (assuming carb). TPI, this one http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD806...keHeaders.aspx .

Re: What heads to use

alright thank you, i was looking at the Vortec heads on summit, the Gm performance ones, are they already outfitted for a bigger cam or are they stock size springs on them? and i should be looking at 64cc chamber heads? and il be able to run pump gas. the reason i asked what size head gasket to use was because isnt there something called a Quench hieght or soemthing?

If you had a p/n or link to the Summit Vortecs, that would help.

The Patriot heads linked are 190cc intake port and square port exhaust - nice heads, but more for higher-performance applications.

The sdparts head kit is a pretty good package for the money, hard to beat for a street engine.

A 350 with flat tops should have no smaller than 64cc chamber heads. Everything linked so far have been 64cc chambers.

Re: What heads to use

Do you have the engine at home now?
Heads off, so you can tell if it's roller or flat tappet. My moneys on flat tappet, but still, i'd want to be sure. Which is it?

Re: What heads to use

oh sorry i forgot to tell you, this will be a carb motor, probably running a quad jet or a 650 double pumper. the car is a 5 speed. it will only be driven as a street car but id like a quick street car. it has a 9 bolt rear end wtih 2.77 gears i think it was. i wana get a ls1 rear end at some point also.

Re: What heads to use

bump, are those heads any good that i listed the part number for, and what kind of cam should i look for, like i said i have a t5 and 2.77 gears hopefully not those gears for long but what cam will be good. i do like that rough idle but i dont wanna make it un driveable on street or a gas hogging motor. i wont be takin it to the track either. its flat tappet

Re: What heads to use

Those heads will work fine. Make sure you buy a vortec intake to match it.
Vortec performer RPM is good, but only comes in square bore, so plan on getting the 650 double pumper.

A comp xe262h is a great cam for a vortec combo 350 that gets driven often. If you wanted to go "***** to the wall" you'd step up to the xe268h or the fear-inspiring xe274h (I should be in sales...).
But if you want everyday torque (and have 2.77 gears for any length of time) then the xe262h is great.

Re: What heads to use

thanks, i really appriciate the help quite a bit. but is there anyone that can tell me what the quench in a engine means? and would a 650 double pumper be the right choice, or would a quadra jet do just as good.

Re: What heads to use

Quench is the deck height plus the gasket thickness. Around .040" is best to help avoid detonation.
So if your pistons are the nice low rider style, and you have your typical .040" gasket, it's .075" or so, and terrible. Another good reason to zero deck the block.
A q-jet would work fine. Personally I don't think it's worthwhile to pay $400+ on a holley when I have a q-jet laying around (lots of q-jets laying around).

Not to mention the fact that you'll also see a lot better gas milage with the qjet, a double pumper would be a bit snappier after the shifts though, seeing as the car is a manual
