What’s that thing below the AC compressor called?

What ever it is, it is not spinning. Here is the story: Early on Sunday morning (very cold) I start the engine and a loud screeching sound is coming out from under the hood. I let it run to see if it will clear up. It doesn’t. In fact, I start to smell burnt rubber, so I cut the engine off. I come back to the car later that day and remove the serpentine belt so that I can check which accessory wheel is not spinning and screwing up my belt. The only wheel that doesn’t spin when I go to spin it with my hand (other than the one coming from the engine that drives all the others) is the one below the AC compressor. It’s a 1992 Camaro RS with a 305 TBI engine.

(1) What it is called or what is its function?
(2) Do I have to remove and replace the whole unit or can I just remove and replace the wheel itself (like I did with the tensioner pulley wheel)?

Thanks for any help

Or you could probably just get a shorter belt and reroute it. No cost for pulley, and since you smoked the belt, you need a new one anyway

Actually if he re routes his belt he's going to need a longer belt,if you want to re route it try goodyear part# 4060967,this will keep all your accesories turning in the direction they should,or you have to change your smog pump wich is very easy to do as well.

Mine did the same thing. It cost like $50 for a rebuilt one which is probably cheaper than the "delete" pully. It's not much of a load on the motor. The fan on the alternator probably takes more HP to run.

Re: What’s that thing below the AC compressor called?

Since I have emissions inspection coming up this year, I decided to put in a rebuilt smog pump. Pretty easy job to remove and replace the pump. It cost me $80 bucks which I thought was kinda high, but of the 3 local parts stores I called to get a price, one didn’t answer the phone, and the second guy sounded like he didn’t know what a smog pump was, was really there only to draw a paycheck, and he couldn’t find it on the computer he was using, so I paid the $80 b/c it was convenient and the guy knew what I was asking for.

Thanks for your help guys.

PS: If anyone wants to just omit the smog pump: https://www.thirdgen.org/serpentine

Whichever way it goes, point is the same. He already needs a new belt, so just buy the right one and forget the delete pulley. Or replace the pump and have all of your emmisions equipment working properly.

take the crap out of there, get rid of the A.I.R. tubes and plug the holes in the manifolds, and enjoy the increased response in your engine!
