Car won't stay running
Car won't stay running
Hello everyone, I'm new to the boards here. I just bought an auto 85 Camaro Z-28 with the 305 TPI. It's all original, no mods, 1 previous owner car with 155,000 miles. The car ran great for the first few weeks. It stalled while at a red light once but I quickly got it started again. I have tried to get it started after having it parked a few days with no luck. It will crank but won't start. The only way the car will run is if I keep my gas pedal down. Once I release the pedal it shuts off. I don't have very many resources (tools). I checked my ECM and I'm good with code 12's. so that is fine. It seems as if it's a fuel pressure problem, but then again I'm no mechanic. Any help or recommendations on where to start next would be greatly appreciated. I have access to the auto hobby shop here on base to rent some tools so I just need some direction. Thanks.

Re: Car won't stay running
sounds like your iac is stuck. i would pull it out and see if its just gummed up or the ports are dirty. with 155k on it, i can only assume its filthy. that, and borrow a voltage meter from someone or pick one up (10-20 dollars at walmart.. buy the digital one) and test the tps sensor. if that fails or goes out of range, it can seriously mess up your fuel mixture and cause it to stall.

I just had this problem a couple days ago with my 91 305 TPI, if I sprayed Carb cleaner in the Throttle body it would start. Well it ended up being the Idle Air Control Valve, very easy to replace, and it only costs $37. All you have to do is take your air filter assy off, and it should be located (your at the front of the car looking aft) on the left aft part of the carb, aft of your TPS. It unscrews with a wrench, and an electrical disconnect. You can clean it and try to reinstall to see if it will work, but I suggest just replacing it. Easy and you know then if that’s the real problem.
Re: Car won't stay running
Took it to a local shop and this is what they told me they found. (Computer Diagnostic) They could not replicate my problems when I first dropped it off. I told them everything I could think of that I tried. Messing with the IAC and TPS. Well I told them to let it sit and try to start it again. Well they call back and said it was the MAF, that it had fluctuating voltage from 3 to 9 volts. Can this make my car run erratically like it has been?
