Hi I have a 90 IROC-Z and my 305 T.P.I .automatic.starting making a ticking sound(I thought it was the lifters)Then When I got off the freeway it started making a Clicking sound under Intake and trust me its a ugly sound .Please help I need my Baby back on the road Please.

 

It could be misfiring through the intake. That happened to me.

 

that would be your lifter but to make sure take a screw driver and place it on the valve covers and place your ear on the screw driver to see what side it comming from once you know what side its comming from take off the valve cover for that side and disconnect your dis so that it wont fire have one of your frien turn the car over and watch and see with valve dosnt have oil comming out of it. once you know what valve it is and all change the oil but only put 4 quarts of reguler oil in it and then add a think of marvel mystery oil to it and drive it. but if your in dier need add a quart of trany fluid to your motor oil drive it for about an hre and change the oil the tany fluid will clean the lifters and get read of the lifter ticking. hope this helps

 

What could possibly be the problem I told It was the Distributor and Spark plugs so I bought them new but It calmed the Idel alittle but still ticks and clicks also engine sound weird under acceleration .

 

have you cheack your timming also to see if it has jumped time any just loosen your dis and rotate it back and forth and see if that gets read of the spark knock

 

Well my dadz mechanic put everything on the car and he set it back 2 specs.But the noise it makes sound like staight up detonation at times.Im confused the mechanic told me it may be the Valves.What do you think man?

 

You need to rule out if it is a top end noise or a bottom end noise. If you think that it is a top end noise, it could be a lifter, and the trans oil trick may help you out.
How does the car run? Does it seem to have power, or has it lost power?
I had a problem where I had a similar situation. It started off as a tick, and quickly became knock. It turned out that it was a bad rod bearing. Some times it can be a bit hard to tell. That's why you need to figure out where in the engine the noise is coming from.

 

yea what he said you need to figure out where its comming from first then we can try to pin point hte problem

 

It would be the top end.The click is loud and every time it ticks the engine loses idle power.Yes,I lost power it responds so slugish now.When I do heavy accelertion it sounds like a bubbly gargel.Thanks for the help.

 

It ay be your injectors that clicks. and if it makes and "bubble gargel" it may be way to rich and not burning the fuel... (it may smell fuel...) If you have your car idle and pull the powerconnector to each injector, does the idle get worse or no change... if theres no change at all, that injector dosent spray right... if it get worse, the injector fires..

 

Ok um When I give it gas hard it makes noise then goes slugishly.The car sounds like a subaru sti kind of.

 

You could have a collapsed lifter. I would do the trans fluid trick and see if that takes care of your problem. Add just a little bit of trans fluid to your motor oil. Maybe about an ounce, and let the car idle. You should be able to see a change if a lifter is the case within a minute.
If you suspect an injector, test the resistance across each injector, and see if all are within spec. However, I think that you probably have a valve train problem rather than injector problem. Does your car seem to consume any oil? You can also do a compression test and a leak down test, and that would be your best bet in getting an idea of what's going on.

 

i have efi on my 305 and just did a tune up (coil rotor plugs wires cap)
it making a clicking now dont remember from before sound like its coming from the intake

 

do you have headers on the car. mine loosen up every couple hundred mile and sound awful but for some reason they only loosen on the drivers side. i would give that a shot.

 

nope no headers yet got the noise after i put on the new coil just put the old one back no change
could all the new stuff messed something up with the fuel injection

 

im telling you trust me give it a shot try and tighten the manifold bolts. they may have backed out. i put new injectors in my car a while back and afterthe first start up it was ridiculously loud.

 

ticking gone, had the guys at work look no noise when i started hasn't ticked since hope it doesn't come back

 

the noise just went away on its own

ya went to show the guys and there was no ticking they said it could be a lifter but it was quick and not as loud as I've herd before but i guess the noise would vary
