How high can you rev a stock 350?
How high can you rev a stock 350?
It's an L98 with 97k on it at the moment, very healthy running. I will be doing work to it eventually, but I don't want to end up picking components that make it peak the power at @ 6500, then see a rod fly through my hood. I searched around, and it seems that a good aftermarket balancer will let it tolerate a bit of a higher rev. Does anyone have any experience with revving the stock bottom end > or = 6500?

It's typically the rod bolts that let loose when you consistently rev it over 6000 RPMs. An aftermarket harmonic damper isn't going to help that.

Re: How high can you rev a stock 350?
from what i've seen, dont make peak power over 6000 for too long. I'd tolerate peak at 6000-6200 but dont rev much over 6200. Shift there it will help it last longer. But thats for a limited use car that doesnt always see those rpms
LT1 guys run near 6500 rpms on stock bottom ends and their stuff is a tad stronger than ours. So i'd only go to 6200 if your peaking at 6000. Good balancer will help alittle, but its the internals that will let loose. vibrations above 4500 could wreck the internals since the stock assembly may not be balanced for those high rpms
I accidently revved my car to 6500 once on the stock bottom and it handled it fine but that was ONE time

if you're keeping the factory tpi setup plan to stay below 5k since it will not make power above that.

Re: How high can you rev a stock 350?
The shortblock that I have is all stock with the exception of the ARP rod bolts and main studs that I had out in. It's also an L98 block as well and mine pulls about to 6400 I quess because the factory tach on my 86 Trans Am stops at 6000rpm so I'm assuming that it pulls to that rpm I do know that It still pulls past 6000rpm though and my block is just a 2-bolt main with arp main studs and arp head bolts......I've had this setup for a couple of years now and still no problems, i'm going to toss this block for an LG4 305 with LT1 welded heads see what happens....

if you are not drag racin why do you need to go over 5k
you can make 400hp/400tq at about 5k without breakin the bank
is it the "I am running 6500rpm" while holdin you sack factor
if so you guys are way to young
this site needs an age question that is manatory
