Crank pulley won't line up... machine the balancer??

I installed a GMPP serpentine setup and after 5 minutes it ate the belt. The crank pulley sticks out 1/8th inch farther than the other pulleys. I tried to push the balancer on farther with no luck so i removed it and reinstalled it and it is still too far out. The Summit tech line said to shim everything out or i could have the balancer cut on a lathe. Has anyone evr heard of that ?

That's a new one on me. I wouldn't want my balancer "customized" fit that.
It should be fairly easy to just add 3/8" washers under the mounting bolts for the alternator and power steering.
ooh, what about the water pump? That pulley is bolted onto the pump via a few 1/4" bolts right? Can you space that out too?

I don't like the idea of cutting the balancer either. I found out through Summit tech that they do make spacers for the water pump.

When I spent $570 for a GM setup I expected it to be right but this is how my luck goes. At least my MSD e-curve is what i expected.

Wow man, and the e-curve? You like to spend your money on the cutting edge stuff that squeaks out those last few HP eh? Well, hope it all works well.
Link to the water pump spacer if you don't mind? I also like to know about these new nifty things.

Those high dollar parts can always swap over to that 383 or even a 427 s/b!!!

Humm, wierd. The GM set-up fit my application without problems.

That's just the way things go for me. In those pics you posted in the other thread your "bat" terminal isn't right up against the valve cover like mine. I had to cut the terminal in half just to get it on and it is still about an 1/8" from it. I want to make sure it is right before i start it again so i don't waste another $34 on a new belt. I might take it to my mechanic and just say fix it.

I just remembered, when i installed a cloyes double roller, the crank sprocket stuck out too far and i could not use it. I "baked" it at 400 for about 30 minutes and it went on easily but when it bottomed out it was out too far. When i pulled it off a tooth broke off so i said goodbye to $150. Like i said, that is just my luck. Something is just not right with my engine.

Re: Crank pulley won't line up... machine the balancer??

Your crank sprocket for your timing chain might not be fully seated which could be causing your balancer not to fully seat. How many miles on your engine? I had a problem with my Summit brand balancer fully seating properly. I had to sand out the hub of the balancer and boil it in water to get it to fully seat. Are you sure the crank shaft pulley is fully seated against the balancer? Worst case just shim the brackets instead of maching the balancer.

Re: Crank pulley won't line up... machine the balancer??

I bought a new balancer and it went right on. Now everything lines up. I used a 14" adj. wrench and the install tool with the old one and it would not go all the way in. I couldn't see any difference between the 2.

It is just a mystery.

I'm sorry for your problem (I know how annoying that type of thins can be), but the good news is that all ended well, right?
