Re: 90 CAMARO RS 305 TBI QUESTION

Did you verify that your firing order is correct? When you crank the engine, do you get spark at the end of the plug wire? If all that is good, then you may have jumped the timing chain. If you can, pull your number 1 plug and crank the engine till the piston is at TDC. Pull your cap off and see if the rotor is pointed at the number 1 position on the distributor. That will be the easiest way to see if you jumped your chain.
Good Luck!!!

Re: 90 CAMARO RS 305 TBI QUESTION

you dont have to pull the gear cover off. pull number one plug, and make sure it is at top dead center, meaning it is at the top of the stroke. pull the distributor cap off, and see if the rotor is lined up to fire the number one plug. If you want to pull the cover off, you may as well replace the timing chain and gears, as it is a pretty good amount of work. crank pully, water pump, and oil pan need to be dropped. Dont think because the cover came off without dropping the oil pan, that it will go on..it wont. you have to at least drop it an inch to get the timing cover to go on. pain in the butt. I just finished doing mine yesterday, and it isnt much fun. If you take the cover off, just roll the crank, and see if the timing marks line up when the number one cylinder is at top dead center. if it is, you didnt jump the chain. if it is off, and there is slop in the chain..replace it. I feel anything more than 1/4" movement is slop, and for the small price of the set, its worth replacing if you went that far.

Re: 90 CAMARO RS 305 TBI QUESTION

you said you changed plugs, are they on correctly. i would double check them all first before you do anything else, chances are it is something simple like that.

Re: 90 CAMARO RS 305 TBI QUESTION

okay following the above statements of bring cyl 1 to tdc... you will actually be presented with 2 possible rotor locations... obviously pointing at the number one plug terminal but also the number 6 terminal may be indicated... there is nothing wrong with your timing as long as one of those terminals is indicated

I agree the rotor could be pointing at 1 or 6, but if it points at number 6, then the number 1 cylinder is not at TDC. If the rotor points at number 6 the crank pulley timing mark will line up at TDC. Turn the crank one full rotation till the timing mark hits zero on the timing pointer and that will be TDC for number one.
If you pull the plug and put your finger near the plug hole, you will feel air push out as number one builds compression and then you will truly be at TDC and your rotor should be pointing at the number one cylinder.

The timing gears have a dot on each one that line up. If you pull the cover and align the marks, the rotor should point only to number one on the distributor.
Clear as mud now??? Good luck!!
