New Batt; Still wont start w/o a jump
That about sums it up.
Key in the ign. All acc off. Turn key and I get a click from the starter, but no turnover.
Did this yesterday and finally started after a few tries. Went to autozone and the batt tested ok, but I went ahead and traded it for a Duralast Gold with huge cranking amps.
Started up and drove about 30 minutes. Got home. Went back out to start it and same symptoms.
Wouldnt start until I jumped the battery.
I get good volts on my guage while driving. I dont understand.

Check the main ground from the battery to the block.

Where exactly is that?
To test a bad ground, could I just jump the neg terminal to the chassis somewhere (with cables)?
Edit: I forgot. Just remembered where it is. I will check. Thanks

I am soooooo sick of this car. Checked the ground to engine: fine. Checked to make sure the starter cables were tight on their conection: fine. I replaced the neg batt cable a few months ago and spliced in to the voltage reg that grounds to the body. Its not soldered but the wires are twisted together and making good conection. Pulled them apart and reconnected. Still same problem.
Wil start intermittently. When it doesnt I hear the starter click once. When it does start, it just starts like there was no problem.
Its so random, I cant pinpoint where the problem is!!!!!

The battery cable goes to the body? No, it has to go to the block. The engine has a hard time getting a high amperage ground to the body for the starter.
Hook a battery cable from the battery ground directly to somewhere on the block. Will it start like that?

That would have been my next suggestion if a heavy ground didn't work.

Users respond to questions only if they feel they want to. A question can be worded so nobody wants to respond. I respond to many questions but also don't respond to many even if I know the answer because I feel the person asking the question isn't qualified enough to do the repairs or modifications they want to do. It's like asking a dentist how you can do your own fillings. Everyone thinks they have mechanical knowledge but many shouldn't own any tools.
Don't take it personally if nobody answers your questions. The topic could be so vague that someone who many know the answer won't even click on the topic.
Many times the search feature can also answer your questions. There's about 10 years worth of messages archived.

No, I think your problems lie with having corroded grounding points.
P.S. Also, I one time had a starter, once it was fully heat soaked, it couldn't roll the motor over to save my rear!

Re: New Batt; Still wont start w/o a jump
Sorry for not replying yesterday. Ground to the block is fine. This sounds like its starter (like 89irokconvert said), but I'm slapping my forehead thinking WHY is it always another STUPID starter?
I have been plagued with crap starters. I replaced 4 stinkin starters last year. 3 were Autocrap stock starters, which all pooped out after a month. The fourth , last Novmber, was a LT1 starter from a 96 camaro and it lasted me 6 months.
I am just boggled.
If I had the $$ I would never buy ANY PART from AZ, Pep, Advanced, ETC.
I'm getting mighty miffed because at this point I can replace a starter blind and I am not employed as a mechanic!

Re: New Batt; Still wont start w/o a jump
When I bought my truck back in 96, the starter failed a few months after I bought it. Installed a new NAPA starter and it lasted about 6 months. Went and got a junkyard starter and it's still in my truck.
I run a mini starter on the race car. To pull the starter off, I have to pull the header because one tube goes directly under one of the starter bolts.
