Running Rich

i have a 1984 camaro with the 305 H.O. motor it seems to be running super rich if u stand behind it and smell the exhuast it makes your eyes water also there seems to be a mixture of condensation and raw gas coming out of the tail pipes what could be causing this i dont know exactly what the timing is set at my dad set it by hand when we put the engine back together could that be the problem it runs great just smells rich and horrible gas milage

Re: Running Rich

I am soon going to be known as the "When was the last time it was tuned up" guy.

Sooo ... when was the last time it was tuned up? Fuel Filter, Oil change, Plugs and checked (Wires, Cap, Rotor, Filters, Sensors)

Re: Running Rich

gasket set? for?

Yea, i'd be inclined to agree that it's either O2 sensor, or tuning. Does your onboard computer work? ever get a check engine light?
If no light, then O2 sensor is probably ok (as long as the bulb is working...) . Then you just go check your carb tuning and ignition setting.

Re: Running Rich

Ok great. That being the case, and I am assuming that the elecrical is doing the job that it should, I would say it is most likely the Oxygen sensor...

Re: Running Rich

im only 17 so im learning at all this the gasket set was an entire engine set. yes the check engine light will come on randomly for a few seconds but if you rev it up it will go off

Re: Running Rich

Then I would really think it would be the o2. You rev it, the carb lets in more air and it gets sorted out. Does it run ok as it is warming up, and then get worse as it is at operating temp?

Also what 02 sensor would you suggest i get

Re: Running Rich

Delco... AC Delco. Kind of Ironic as how the sensor it self looks like a spark plug.

So, you basically have 9 AC Delco plugs in the car.

Do you know where the sensor is, and how to remove it?

Re: Running Rich

That would be it. Looks like a spark plug in the exhaust system. Its also the only thing with a wire coming out of the exhaust too

Re: Running Rich

Check engine light comes on then goes off---this means that the computer is still storing the trouble codes and is sitting there, right now, waiting patiently for you to spend a few minutes and allow it to tell you what the prob is..or at least point you in the right direction. There's a tech article on this site, in, I think, FAQs, that outlines pulling the codes and what each one means. Check it and get back to us. Before randomly purchasing replacement parts.

Yes you should, provided it's going into open loop. Once it's disconnected the ecm will stop trying to adjust the mixture and the idle will probably smooth out. IF everything else is working fine it will operate using its 'last known good' data. This is not a test of the O2 sensor, however.

Re: Running Rich

there is a nut under your distributor its a 9/16

loosen it you dont need a timing light just read this

move the dissy about a 1/2 inch counter clockwise tighten it down and start it

your timming chain is old and the chain is sagging if you have not replaced it by now you are probably doing damage to your motor

your can get one for 16 bucks but I suggest buying the cheapest double roller for around 30

you will notice a big diff in the all around drivability of your ride

you should also have someone who knows the deal to go through your quadrajet

a rebuild kit is only 25 bucks and make sure it gets soaked for a while- a long while

q-jets dont take to sitting for long periods of time with fuel in them

Re: Running Rich

oooo, don't mess with the dist just yet. timing chain stretch can be an issue as it can retard the cam timing. dist timing can still be set properly by tdc marks though.
