How can i idel at 7 or 800 rpms!

Ok i have a flowmaster exsaust witch souds pretty good. Now when i start my car up in the morning it sounds really good. Then once it warms up i idels down to 400 rpms then you cant hear my exsaust. Now when i pull up to a red light i want my car to rumble and i power brake and give it a little gas and at 7 or 800 it sounds very good.

Now how can i make my car just idle down to their and not way down to 400rpms?
thanks
kevin

With TBI you probably need to have it programmed to set that speed as the target idle speed. I don't think it can be mechanically adjusted, like the stop screw on a carb.

TBI idle speed is controlled by the ECM. You will need to re-burn the PROM to change it.

You can do this yourself, but I wouldn't recommend learning PROM tuning just so you can change the idle speed.

The idle speed on my tbi is around 750, did the flowmaster effect the idle somehow?

Very good chance a blown resistor on your tach board inside the gauge cluster is causing your tach to read high. MOST, and I'm not exaggerating, MOST late model thirdgens have this problem.

Of course you could have some other problem with the engine that is causing a high idle...but if all else is good the computer will adjust the idle down to mid-low 500s

Nope - its all electronic on your car, unlike the carbureted cars.

Sounds like you've got problems to be addressed if your car idles at 400 RPMs. Go get it looked at or do it yourself, I think the proper idle is between 500-700

i am not sure but i think with a more free flowing exhaust you have to tweek the timing a lil bit......

I adjusted the idle on my TBI through the torx key on the TBI unit, there is a tech article on how to do it on here......

Re: How can i idel at 7 or 800 rpms!

https://www.thirdgen.org/tpimod2

worked for me, i had a high idle, about 1500rpms, when i adjusted that, i got it down to about 600-700 depending on if im in park or drive, right where it should be. I dont know why they would say it cant be adjusted, all i did was search for adjusting idle and i eventually found my way to that article......

Re: How can i idel at 7 or 800 rpms!

You don't want to disconnect your IAC. That opens up to start, then closes and stays slightly open to idle. You will need that, but if you adjust that torx on the drivers side of the throttle body, you can get the increase in idle. Because of the throttle position sensor, the computer should be able to compensate for that bit of extra air with some extra fuel.

You would cause a lot more trouble than it's worth to disconnect the IAC.

Well on a TPI car you have to disconnect the IAC to set the minimum air, or else the IAC will compensate and rise them rpm and you dont know what the "base rpm" will be. If you got a ALDL cable you could log it using tts datamaster and leave the IAC connected, and adjust it so the IAC se 20 steps at idle, then youre right. Thats on a TPI.

Re: How can i idel at 7 or 800 rpms!

Yea i forgot to mention that you dont undo the IAC on a TBI, it pretty much relies on it to run, just adjust the torx screw, mine worked fine, so im assuming the computer is capable of compensation for small adjustments, but for future reference, the IAC is next to the TPS on the passenger side of the TBI unit, when i adjusted my idle i took mine out and cleaned it with carb cleaner, it gets dirty over time which can sometimes result in a bad idle.

The screw is actually on the front of the TB, with this pic i circled the housing, there may be a punch in the hole4, just poke it with a screwdriver and it should come out to reveal the screw.

in your pic its kinda dark, and i cant tell if you have the punch or not but looking from the pic, the punch and screw would be approx in this location
