Re: help with backfire

Sorry, I don't have a solution but I wanted to chime in: mine's doing the same thing. I created a post that has more details but it's driving me insane cos I'm also running rich (smells bad) and getting poor mileage

Re: help with backfire

backfiring through the carb (or if FI intake) or exhaust? through carb/intake is a lean condition and through the exhust is a rich condition. after we know that and you induction (carb, TPI TBI), people will be able to help you better.

Re: help with backfire

Mine does it too. Only in park while revving it (350 TPI). It's more of a pop from the exhaust than a loud backfire. I can say that I have had almost new cars before that have done the same thing. My GTA does run rich though, I know I probably need to change my plugs.

Re: help with backfire

My car is a 85 TA with non computer controled carb and vacuum advanced HEI distributor. My car is also running a bit rich. You can smell it in the exhaust. I set my timing back to the number 4 on the tab but it still does the same thing. Also all the polution cantrol junk and cat are gone. Thanks for the help.

Re: help with backfire

my 85 IROC w/carbed 350 was popping through the carb when i messed up and ran 87 through it. i decided not to retard the timing and chose to just run premium.
