L-98 Cam question

Hi all. I just bought an 89 Formula with the 5.7 TPI. The car has an original 63k miles and runs really good but as all stock TPI cars it is slow as a snail. I picked up some go fast bolt ons such as New old stock SLP headers with the bigger primaries, Accel Super ram intake, 1.6 roller rockers Paxton SN89-92 Supercharger with the stock 4-6 lb pulley and a set of March pulleys. The cam I have is a Comp Cams cam. Here is the question, I bought this cam with the intention on building a 383 for my previous car and I bought it from a guy who had a 383 stroker in his vette. It is lopey but he had a lot of internal work done to his car unlike mine so now I would like to know if the specs are compatible with my stock motor running the factory ignition and ecu. The specs are as follows... The part number is 12-000-9 Valve adjustment intake is .026- exhaust .028. Gross valve lift intake .588 exhaust .609 duration at .020 tappet lift intake 286 exhaust 288. This is what I am reading from the card so any input or help would be greatly appreciated. I do plan on going with bigger injectors andfuel pressure regulator but I am retaining all of the smog equipment A/C etc.

Re: L-98 Cam question

i'm pretty sure the factory heads will not support that cam let alone the 1.6 rockers with it.

the ecm will not like it without some tuning as well.

Re: L-98 Cam question

It is a Hydraulic roller cam. As far as the heads go I forgot to add that they will be replaced by either a set of rebuilt L-98 Corvettes (58cc) or a set of AFR's depending on how much more I want to spend o this task. I am not looking for gobs of power just a little more pep to keep up with the times

Re: L-98 Cam question

i dont think that cam is a good choice for a blower and a 350. definately a 383 cam.

whats the duration numbers at .050" lift? whats the LSA?

you'll need alot of work to the vette heads to handle that lift. AFR's can handle that out the box if you upgrade to the 8019 springs. Even the 8017's will handle that lift just have to verify for sure

Re: L-98 Cam question

Thanks for the reply, at 0.50 the intake is 250 exhaust at 256. Lobe lift .3920 on the intake and on the exhaust.4060. Not sure what the LSA means?
----------
Also I dont need to go with the blower. It was at my disposal for a good price so I picked it up. I can get a SLP cold air intake for it if I want to cough up the bucks so thats another option to go on the Superram

Re: L-98 Cam question

get another cam, that will not work for a superam 350

else build a superram 400+ and then that cam may work but that cam wants a miniram and atleast 383 inches. Probly not all that streetable..thats a huge cam.

its a good cam for a big miniram 406-454 small block i'd say

Re: L-98 Cam question

I have heard those Stealth Rams arent worth all of the hassle they come with, plus its only good for around 20HP and all the tuning, air to fuel ratio headaches its just not worth it. Anyone ever use one of the SLP roller cams for these engines? If I go with a 383 I would ditch the supercharger and go with a high compression setup.

Don't run that cam with a stock engine, it's way too big, use the Accel roller cam with 211 deg of duration @ .050 on the intake and 219 on the exhaust (.503/.525 lift with 1.5 ratio rockers, .533/.555 with 1.6 rockers) . That cam was made to work with the super ram on a 350 cu motor. If you are going top use the stock heads you will have to install a good set of valve springs and machine the valve gides down to gain enogh clarence for the extra lift. With the stock computer you are going to need an FMU to increase fuel delivery for the super charger.

Super Ram maybe... but stealth ram...no

i like the idea of boost but it should run on a built motor with a mild blower style cam.

If you do 383, decide what rpms you want to turn and what power you want to make. that cam is stilll rather large for a 383 reguardless unless its a race only setup

Re: L-98 Cam question

I have seen a forum specificlly for the Stealth Ram and there were more downs than ups but I have never had one so I cant really voice an opinion. I had the Superram on a GTA quite a few years back and it made a hell of a difference so thats why I opted for it a second time around. Thanks for all the replys everyone its greatly appreciated and its also good to know there are some true enthusiasts of the third gen F-bodys left. Most F-bodys fell victim to poor upkeep and hard driving. After the replys I am starting to think maybe I will bolt on only the intake and supercharger and leave everything else be for preservations sake. The car still retains the factory exhaust with the dual cats and it is more on the quite side which I enjoy. I even went out of my way to locate and buy all NOS GM Ac Delco heavy duty shocks and struts, new coil springs front and rear to bring the ride height back. Its like watching a child grow to me I truly love the car so its better I dont hack it up like most others. Once again, thanks all and keep on cruisin!

If you are going to supercharge the car at least up grade the coil and install the SLP 1 3/4" headers for dual cat and the SLP 3" cat back that by the way it's not as loud as the flomaster. This SLP kit was sold at the Chevy/Pontiac dealers for Camaros & Firebirds with a GM part number.

Re: L-98 Cam question

I built a 383 for my 85 TPI Corvette. Stayed with the tuned port. L-98 heads are kinda crappy. Even with work done, their still crappy. If your wanting to do this on a budget try Patriot Performance heads. That's what I put on the vette. 500 hundred buck for a set of aluminum heads. especially when you see the quality of those heads! They would be killer even if they were a thousand bucks. Got them on three of my cars. Love them. Your gonna HAVE to upgrade the ECM. Won't run right with out it. I upgraded the throttlebody, and had a friend of a friend upgrade the ecm. It was good for 412hp on a rolling dyno. The intake and runners were polished but nothing else. Give Comp Cams tech line a call. You will need to have a custom grind. I did. Comp knows their stuff when it comes to TPI.
