Need a 'lil help with this.
Hows it going? First off, If this is not the right forum for this, I do apologize. I'm fairly new to the this site. Recently I purchased a '92 camaro RS w/ 305 auto. I only gave $800 for it. It runs real rough, but it runs. I have be doing alot of searching here and found alot of really helpful information. I've learned alot in the last few days. Anyways, back to the car. Like i said, its running real rough. I assumed it was a vaccum leak. It won't even idle. It surges real bad and if i put it into gear, it dies. I've taken WD40 and tried to find any leaks and found none. Today, I jaked the car up and got under neath it and started fiddling around and came across a wire thats was just danggling there. I honeslty have no idea what it goes to. I tried to take the best pic. possible. Can anyone idenify what this goes to? Its on the passenger side.

The only thing I can think of is that its the cooling fan switch wire on the pass. side. The switch is located between the #8 and #6 spark plugs on pass. side head. Check there.

Its the knock sensor wire. It some how got pulled out of the plug. How do I replace the wire? I'm not sure if the sensor is bad or not so i don't wont to replace it just yet. Just need to repair the wire. Will this make the car run like its running?

I would say that if the knock sensor is disconnected it will not run very well. You can replace the connector. Here's a link for one.http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...pe=412&PTSet=A

It will run fine with the knock sensor disconnected. Your problem lies elsewhere. I'd change the plugs. One or more may be fouled from the notoriously leaky valve seals.

Re: Need a 'lil help with this.
well, i finally got a chance to mess with the car today after work. just curious, i plugged that wire back into the sensor and cranked the car and it purred like a kitten. my service engine light was on now so i checked the code and it was "43" ( Low voltage at electronic spark timing circuit). i plugged the wire in just enough to get some kind of connection so thats where the low voltage is comming from. this weekend i am gonna try and find the pig tail that plugs into the knock sensor and replace it. that should fix the problem. so jv9999, no disrespect, but i'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. the wire was pulled out and ran like crap. i plugged it back in and it purred like a kitten.

Re: Need a 'lil help with this.
yes thats the fan switch, it has the same type of connector as the knock sensor does, easy to get em confused. That won't effect running at all, but unplugged your cooling fan won't work and the car will overheat eventually. I thought you plugged it in to the knock sensor and it fixed the problem and threw a 43?

Re: Need a 'lil help with this.
If you have dual fans, that switch controls one of the fans. The other is controlled by the ECM.

Re: Need a 'lil help with this.
well, getting no where with car. today, after work, i cranked the car. it fired off first try. i let it sit there and idle, high idle. it didnt surge hardly any. several mins. of idling, it finally over heated, so i killed it. also throwing code 34, low voltage(high vacuum) at map sensor. i believe thats correct. i've yet to find the harness in the pic above so i can replace it so the fan will kick on. I called the dealership and they say the only thing they pull up in their computer is the coolant sensor, not a coolant fan switch. help the newbee out pls.

Re: Need a 'lil help with this.
If your car is a vin code E, the color of the cooling fan switch wire is dark green/white according to my chiltons manual. I attached a pic for your code 34. Can be hard to find wires sometimes, especially when your looking for one wire and the connector could be missing or melted. If you have dual fans, the coolant temp sensor tells the ecm what the temp is and then the ecm will turn on the primary fan when its at a certain temp. The fan switch controls the secondary fan at a higher temp.

If your looking for the connector for the fan switch, it should be the same as the knock sensor connector. There's a link in my previous post

Re: Need a 'lil help with this.
What part do you actually need? Is the wiring missing all togather or just the connector? As mentioned above it's the same type of connector as a knock sensor. You should be able to scavenge the correct connector from any number of gm vehicles, it doesn't have to be off a camaro. Some parts stores are better than others, there is a local store by me that can order any electrical connector you can think of, a gm dealer would also be able to get them.

Re: Need a 'lil help with this.
dumb question, when splicing the wires together, will it be alright to just twist them together and wrap very good w/ electrical tape? I know soldering is reccommended, its just a pain in the *** to get to.

Re: Need a 'lil help with this.
If you don't solder it, at least use a crimp style butt connector. In either case, use some heat shrink tubing to insulate it. An auto parts store or even a Radio Shack will stock these items. Tape will either soften w/ heat or become brittle with the cold and eventually come off. 3M even makes a heat shrink butt connector. EFI Connections probably sells something that will work, too.
