Car Jumps When Put in Gear?????

Ok. So I have an automatic 1987 Chevy Camaro Iroc. The engine was originally a 305 however the previous owner had a Chevy dealership install a 350. The car has 160,000 miles on it and from what the previous owner said the tranny was rebuilt at 120,000. Here is the deal. The car runs and drives and handles great however when I put the car into reverse, neutral, drive, etc the car "jumps" if that is the right word...also when going slower speeds and the car shifts i feel the jump.. its a very hard shift.. just wondering if this is normal or what the problem is. Thanks

What's the idle at? A high idle could cause that sensation when putting it in gear.

Also how posative are you its a 350? I can't tell how many times I've been told "it's got a 350" only to find out its a 305 later.

Re: Car Jumps When Put in Gear?????

I believe it is idling at about 5,000 - 6,000 rpms.... like i said it feels like a jump or rather feels like the car has some kind of kick to it or something.. it definately feels like its from the rear and is like a dip or something occurs.. its hard to explain.. i just wasnt sure if the transmission or something like that was going and was going to need replacing or something.. i mean im am really only used to driving newer cars.. this is my first project car and first car that was purchased that wasnt brand new.. so maybe i am too used to shifting being so smooth but just wanted to make sure it wasnt something more serious...

Also I have paperwork from the dealership that installed the engine that states its a 350. Also on the engine itself on the sticker it says 350 and i just have to find out where to get the numbers off of the engine so I can verify on that one site what kind of engine it is. But I do have a warranty booklet and whatnot from the Dealership that installed it.

Check your motor mounts and transmission mount. I'll bet you find worn-out 20 year-old rubber and the source of your problem...

One of mine did that. I found that I had a broken trans mount.

I would check your mounts, it also depends on how much it jumps.
My 83 1/2 with a 305 did too. But it was more like a little nudge, from the torque of the engine.
Also part of it driving could be a shift kit.

Re: Car Jumps When Put in Gear?????

Earlier 700R4s don't have the auxiliary valvebody with the forward and reverse accumulators to soften the shift into gear.
