Stalling/Starting Issue

Ok, this is ah new one for me. Alright, just to start with how I got here, I punched the accel and did fine, turned a few corners and punched it again, this time, something was different, it was lacking, almost like it was out of gas or just losing power, gave it some more and it stalled.

So, I tried to start it, I hear the starter kick in but it doesn't turn even once, just kicks in for half a second then everything ticks, dash lights, radio faceplate light and a loud ticking, once per second maybe a little be faster.

I was thinking it might have been my battery? but it's above red zone, about 2 notches past red when I check my bat gauge?

I know the whole starting thing happened before and it turned out to be my battery, but what about the stalling and then not starting.

Thanks, much appreciation.

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

when were the battery cables last replaced? do you have a heat shield on the starter? is it a carb car or an fi car?

Not sure about the heat shield, I believe so, I don't know when the bat cables have been replaced and it's FI 305

Taking GF's car now to try to jump it, be back sooner then later hopefully.

Thanks for anymore insight you guys may have.

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

make sure the cables are tight, if the ecm isn't getting enough power, the car won't run, the ignition will also start to give probs if it isn't getting enough voltage and amperage.even if the connections seem tight, I would double check, I had them back off on my old K5 blaer, they felt snug ('cause they were), but weren't tight enough. it wouldn't even turn over until I tightened the connections tighter.

Could also be a ignition control module.

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

cheap is always good

When my ICM was on the way out, it would die at stoplights, but start up, i got up on the highway a few days later, died when i started to slow down, wouldnt start, replaced ICM fired right up. Few months later coming back from LA going up the grapevine, just ate me a civic and was starting slow back down to about 80, car crapped out. Pulled Over, fired it up, drove a few more mins, craped out again, and would not start. thought i broke something since i was beating on it. Towed it to the shop, waited 3 hours for my wife to come get me, ICM again !!
I now have a spare ICM and tools in my center console

ast time I had one go, it gave a loud backfire, stumbled and quit, turned over, started, and then imediatly quit, and that was all she wrote!, good idea though keeping the spare, it would be nice if the ICM's were easier to get to though!

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

Thanks guys for the insight, but It feels like it is just acting as if the battery is too low to crank the starter, I hear the starter hit but it doesn't actually turn over to start the car, I hear the starter go ding and then there's that clicking.

Last time I got this I replaced the battery, but wierd that it was just died while giving it full throttle and then not start as if I killed the battery while giving it full throttle.

Next question is, I just remembered, I beleive I have a weak alternator, I know if I have the heater running, my lights on, my wipers, and lets say a blinker while driving, the gauge drops like hell, if I turn it off and try to start it, it then acts like the battery is weak turning over slowly.

So could that be a possibility??

before you replace the alt, check/replace your battery cables, also, clean the connections, the cables aren't expensive, and if they are bad, it could be all that is wrong. if power isn't going through the cables as well as it should it puts a higher stain on your alt. with an HEI and an ECM, they will be sapping alot to keep the car running, which leaves less to charge the battery, which won't get charged if the connections and cables are corroded to hell.

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

Alright, so I'll check those batt cables, if they're cheaper hopefully it's just those, or maybe just need to be cleaned, maybe corrosion.

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

When you turn the key to ON but not start it is the battery voltage in between 12-14 ? or does it drop low ?

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

Ok, after a huge BS, my car got impounded because appearantly it was too close to an intersection even though it was about 5 car lengths back where it died, and it only was there for 4 hrs since it died and I last saw in on monday, sound 152 dollars later, bs, I got it back, but I got some more bad news/crap, heh.

Ok, so, the impound lot it was at was nice enough to jump my car, had to wait for the battery to charge for about 30 minutes. My car started but... I had a hard time keeping it going, gave it gas WHILE the battery was still hooked to the charger to keep it at idle, after pumping the gas a bit it would finally idle without throttle, but a little bit of throttle then if I were to sudden let off the throttle quickly it would die.

Also.... there was a squeaky sound, really loud, not the distinctive sound of a fan belt, the guy at the impound lot thought I might have blown the bearings in the engine and thinks it may seize up, ... I'm an idiot, it was dry of oil, I mean it had something on the dipstick, but it would seem like nothing, so I bought 3 courts... yeah... 3 and dropped those in there.

I ended up getting road side assisstance to bring it home, but when I tried to move the car, It would move from the idle torque in drive, if I gave it gas, and the more I gave, it would begin to chug and stall out, and the battery didn't seem to have a very long life span, even after being recharged and moved 5 feet, the battery was again too low to get the starter to even pull one rotation.

So it sounds like a fuel problem since it wouldn't move when I gave it gas, then it sounds like an electrical problem since the battery was already too gone to move the starter, but then there was the sqeak, don't know if it is just from the missuse (I'm an idiot) or just having 165k miles.

Sigh, I don't know what to do....

Worse part is, I have a job interview in the next week that is an hr away...

Bump, just want to know if you guys think that it still may be the cables or ICM, or maybe my alternator?

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

Alright, so I was just outside for a moment with my car just looking at it and trying to assess the situation.

Alright, so I got someone to hook their car to mine for the battery, after letting it sit for a moment I made an attempt to start it. All I got from it was it tried to start, it wouldn't run, sounded like it may have been getting just enough fuel to get it to start but it wouldn't run.

So I am thinking that it may be the ICM? if my fuel rods are firing.

Please for some insite, I'd appreciate it.

I also didn't want to start a new thread, considering it is still the same problem.

No one wants to add some insight?

If someone thinks I should follow the advice previously mentioned, just say so, I just felt the situation might have changed.

Re: Stalling/Starting Issue

Alright, I finally checked the computer for error codes, and got error code 12.

(sigh) (Engine Lacks Power)

I just realized that there may not be any coolant (beating self up) in my car, if the head gasket blew, how would I know?

I've heard that if the gasket blew, you'd find coolant on the ground all over... but if there is very little to no coolant, how would I know?

Man, I am an idiot, I've had this bird this long and I've never gone without this stuff....
