Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
So I have a 1992 RS 305, are you saying ALL 305 & 350 are Roller?
How can I tell if mine is a Roller motor?

From the factory, all U.S. passenger cars 305 & 350, '88-up, got roller lifters.
If you saw something that fits that description that had flat tappet, either the cam or engine has been replaced.

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
Well that could be the case, I dont know this car, bought for the TPI.
Then the motor could be a 350, how to tell this by lookN at it?

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
ITs going to have whatever balancer is on it, they are interchangeable. The only way to know what size engine it has is to get the casting number off the block. Same year, same car is probably going to have the same balancer installed.

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
if its a stock balancer and its skinny its a 350 if its wider its a 305 but im not gonna argue over this... who would change a balancer and put a 305 one on a 350 or vise versus thats would not make sense but w/e

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
OK, the 1990 Friebird T/A has the narrower balancer, 5.0 on back of block.
My 1992 Camaro RS has the wide balancer 5.0, why to different balancers?
I guess the difference in the years maybe! It really dont make any since.

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
Depending on the year and the specific engine, they are not different at all, they will have the exact same part number. I'm glad you wont argue, because you are not right. Why would it not make sense? The balancers are not CI dependant, they are dependant upon the diameter and how it works with the rotating assembly and timing tab.

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
FWIW, the 5.0L in my '87 IROC has a factory roller cam.
What's also strange is that it has center bolt valve covers, but it doesn't have self-aligning rocker arms. It also has the lo-po rotators on top of the exhaust springs.

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
Well all I can say is that the balancer is diff. from 1990 Firebird to a 1992 camaro.
Both are 305 CID both are a AUTO. and they are both center bolt valve covers.
So you STILL have not said why the bal. is DIFF. Thanks.

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
No, you cant. The press fit size of the balancer is the same between the 305and 350. They will in fact use the exact same crankshaft casting, just a different balance. The balancer can differ depending on pulley/belt configuration, timing cover/tab configuration (Actually the tab changes per the balancer, but its all the same), and possibly the trans combo (although I havent seen proof of this being a deciding point). The only real engine you can tell the difference on is a 400. 305/350 is the same.

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
not mine i have a 305 and a 350 and they are different so your wrong...
Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
I can post part numbers if you would like, but what good would that do. Sometimes I wonder where kids learn it all at such an early age nowadays. Take the one off the 305 and put it on the 350, did he 350 just lose 45CI?
I went ahead and got the part numbers. Here is a lookup on a 1988 camaro:
305:
27-305-F 12551537 $157.22
350
27-Vibration Damper 12551537 $157.22
The first part is GM part description in alldatapro catalog. Then part number and price.

Re: Any 305 Roller Factory
You have NO clue what you are talking about. I have seen 350s and 305s BOTH running either 6 3/4" or 8" diameter balancers out of the factory. Just depends on the year and application. Most of the performance cars ran 6 3/4" balancers and trucks typically have the 8" balancer. As long as you have the timing cover to match it is 100% interchangeable between engines as even the FACTORY did it!
