My car cuts off
Well, I've been lurking on here for a while trying to find a fix for my problem but I can't seem to find a solution. My car finally started after playing with the timing a little but when it's put in gear it cuts off immediately. We had to change the water pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, a thermostat (it didn't have one in), a new radiator with hoses, and put an Edelbrock Performer carb on it. I bought it from a guy who had it sitting around for almost a year or so. It's got a 305 marine engine in it. Please help because i don't want to take it to a shop. Thanks for all of your help.

Re: My car cuts off
I'm sorry it's an 1984 Camaro Z28. it is carbed, and as far as i know it did run at one time. I'm not quite sure if it were properly or not. If anymore info is needed then let me know and I will give you all that I can. Thanks again
Re: My car cuts off
Have you done the basics such as checked routing & condition of all vacuum hoses, and set the idle speed? What about checking for vacuum leaks?
Does it have good gasoline in it? Once I bought a camaro off a guy, tried to tune the carb, new cap, rotor, etc. Still ran bad. Once I removed the gas tank, drained it and refilled it (for other reasons) it ran much better. Old gas is bad gas.
Is the fuel filter decent?
If it's been sitting for a while with gas in the carb, the carb may be gummed up (have deposits) inside.
Not sure if this is a computer controlled distributor. If so, is the computer connection hooked up? If not, is the vacuum advance hooked up?
Good luck with it.

I also forgot to tell you that when the engine is running. It sounds like it's misfiring or skipping. I don't know if it will help but it makes the car do a quick shake at that point. All hoses and vacuum lines check out execpt there is no vacuum line coming from the distributor. I was given an electronic distributor with the car, will that help. I didn't know if I should put it on because I don't have a computer as far as i know. If I do someone please help me locate it, because I have a butt-load of wires in the engine bay.
Re: My car cuts off
Are you saying that the distributor has a place for a vacuum line (a little vacuum canister with a little connection), but that none is connected? If so, this may be at least part of your problem. In that case, this will need to be connect one of the ports on your carburetor. You'll need to refer to a diagram to see which one. There are two different kinds of vacuum ports on the carb (they don't do the same thing).
Now, I'm not sure what you mean about an electronic distributor you were given with the car. Is this distributor now in the car or is it an extra one? I'm not sure what type of distributor you have in the car since the engine isn't original. Suggest you post a picture of the distributor.
Like I was saying if it's a vacuum advance distributor - that vacuum hose needs to be connected to run right. If it's a computer controlled distributor - that connector needs to be connected to run right.

Do a reply. Under the reply (while you're still typing) click "go advanced." Then wait a minute while it loads, scroll down and click "manage attachments."
You can probably figure it out from there.

Re: My car cuts off
Well, sir, I appreciate all of your help but my uncle took it to his shop and is looking at it and going to fix a few other things for me at cost (thank God). He used to have one and want to fix on another one. Thank you once again.
