Re: speedometer?

Ide guess the speedometer gear where the speedo cable goes into is stripped out. Does the cable spin when the cars moving?

Re: speedometer?

better way to figure it out, kinda more of a neighborhood cruise deal, keep the cable hooked up to your trans and drive it a few feet, maybe around the block without your cluster in, see if it still spins if it does id suggest the gear as pointed out above. you can get a new one OR you could just look for a new speedo let us know how it turns out

Also, the gear on the tail shaft (inside the trans) is held on by a clip that has a nasty habit of falling off.

Re: speedometer?

If you have a T-5, the sticky may be helpful (posting your car's make, model, year, motor, trans, etc.) is always helpful when answering questions

Automatic is 700R4, manual is T5. The first thing to do is get under it and take off the speedometer adapter off (the thing the cable screws into) and see what the gears look like. Properly supported of course. Be safe.

However i dont know what i did that fixed it. i dont think its right however. the tranny came out of a 80s model firebird would this have a diffrent rear end ? to cause the speed to be diffrent? thx

Could easily be. Once you determine what the rear ratio is (check the link below), you can purchase the correct drive and/or driven gear. The following is for a 10-bolt:
