Take off sucks! What can i do?
Hey guys i have a slow car but still want it to take off good! I have a 305 tbi with 3:73s but when i test my 0-60 time or something i gun it and it starts at like 1000rpms and slowly builds its self to about 2 and then its good the rest of the way. I cant even turn the tires over just by stomping on it? I think that will really help my 0-60 time and stuff (best 7.7 sec
). I am going to be puting a aluminum driveshaft on soon!
thanks

how are you launching? ie: Brake stalling, or just mashing the throttle off the line ?

Re: Take off sucks! What can i do?
I would change your torque converter. Something like a 2200 rpm stall would be good for a daily driver. Just for comparison, go to your local dragstrip. Most dragstrips have an "Open" night where they let anyone run. (Typically a friday night.) Look at your timeslips for the 60' time. Then change out your torque converter and go again. you should see an improvement on the 60' times. Also you could install a shift kit and corvette servo. My TPI 305 IROC has 3:73 rear gears and a full race-built 700R4 and eats 350 TPI cars. The difference is all in the trans.

have you done a tune up lately? Most bogs are caused by spark or gas not getting into the engine. Maybe change your fuel filter

Remove the boat anchor and install a 350 with a carb and problem sovled. If that dosent float your boat the just throw in a 350 long block and swap all you crappy tbi over.

Re: Take off sucks! What can i do?
i got a 2200 stall on a highly moddifed 700r4, 3.23, and a 305 TBI and mine will get up and go off the line with no problem, even with suspention modds, i still lose traction off the line...
i would try the fuel filter, something simple ya know, run about 1/4 a gallon of diesel in the tank, that will clean the injectors (or spend $5 for injector cleaner, its the same thing
a higher stall will help, i cant remember how much help i gave me, my car was almost bone stock when i put the 2200 in it, but i know it felt better off the line....im sure i would hate to put a stock stall back on mine

Re: Take off sucks! What can i do?
gonna be pricy, go to jegs or summit
a B&M is about 250
Hughes 390
TCI 425
all of them are 2500 stall
install depends on the shop, i would guesstamate 200-300....i dont know i do all my own work, but thats what i would charge
i hate pulling/dropping a trans

Re: Take off sucks! What can i do?
One thing you might want to check is the base timing! If the timing is retarted it will be soft coming out of the hole. This can happen in time with wear on the timing set.
Set the base timing to 8-10 degrees (10 if you are running high octane) and see how much difference that makes. Keep in mind the more initial timing will help the bottem end (low RPM) however it can hurt the upper RPM range so the car may not pull as hard at the higher RPM. You can play around with the setting to see where your car runs the best.
The fuel filter as mentioned earlier should be replaced. Just because it is not rusty on the outside does not indicate it is good. I change the fuel filter around once a year.

Check the basics first...then go into buying new parts.....it won't help you to put new stuff on a un-tuned car......if everything is in check.. a 2000 or 2500 stall would probably help.....remember you cam is for low rpm (stock I assume?), so a 2000 rpm stall might work good. some people, including myself before, have gone a cheaper route with the stall convertor.....instead of buying an expensive aftermarket stall convertor, go to your local parts store and get a chevy s10 blazer (votec motor v6) factory torque convertor (get HD version), and put that in your car.....they are very inexpensive and stall up around 2300-2500 rpm....I think they are under $100 new (not for sure). It's like a poor mans stall
But you might try that, just a thought....... Member

Re: Take off sucks! What can i do?
You should be able to spin the tires with a stock 305 and 3.73 gears. There is something else wrong. Like the guys said check the basic stuff first. When my lil 305 was stock with a 2.73 gear I could spin the tires with 255/50-16 GFGs on the back. Get it running right first before you start spending money on other parts.

The idel is up high? When start up it might hit 1900 rpms then drop to like 1400 when its cold but when warmed up in drive its around 800? I think i will do the fuel filter real soon!

How many miles are on the car? Do you know what kind of condition the injectors are in?

Re: Take off sucks! What can i do?
start the car, take your breather off, and look at the spray it should look pretty (lack of better words) but a fine spray, no huge dropletts or drips.....if you want to see how a new injector sprays tell me, i got a brand new TBI on mine and could take a video and youtube it for ya

Re: Take off sucks! What can i do?
i really dont know, its faster than the speedo, for some reason the speedo dont do to well being smooth when you floor it....i do know..before the 3.23, and some of the mods, losing traction lake crazy off the line, and shifting early (4600) i ran a 9.5 in the 1/8.....and that was less than desirable conditons open diff with 2.73, old crappy TBI to
my mods are in my vBGarage, but not all them where on the last time i was at the 1/8
i do know that like i said before, even with suspention moods and a LSD i lose traction off the like and going into 2nd, its not sluggish at anypoint really....you got some issue going on and alot of good ideas of things to check, its one or a combo of a few, but all the ideas people have gave you i highly recomend you do/check

i have a 1992 25th ann edtion wit a 305 tbi and this is what i would do. depending on where you live with emissions hollow the cat out. or buy a new one. get a tbi off a 350 clean the **** outta it with brake clean, spend the extra money and get the good plugs, do the fuel filter and the air filter, check your vaccum lines and you should be able to burn the tires off, this is what i did to mine and they def spin, good luck bro
