check engine light

I have a 82 TA with the 305 engine new rebuilt engine one year old.
The light only comes on when i'm on the highway going at speeds of around 60mph and then at that speed steady it will just go off, it never comes on around town.
oil level is fine, coolant level is fine.

whats wrong or what can i do to check for the problem ?

Re: check engine light

Its probably the temperature warning... It comes on every once in a while just to say its running hot and turns off once it cools down

to check and make sure do the paper clip trick...

if you dont know the plug is under your steering wheel and you can use a paper clip to connect the "A" and "B" ports ill make a makeshift diagram lol

[_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][B][A]
[_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_][_]

I dont think the number of holes is right but just know its the first two from the right on the top

once those are connected just turn your key to the on position (do NOT start) and the ses light will flash

it will flash once than a slight pause and flash twice and then a longer pause it will do this three times that represents the code 12 which just means its starting. afterward it will repeat this process with a new code (or not if you have no codes) count the number of flashes and then again after the slight pause and then combine them (ie 3 flashes and then 4 flashes = code 34) and this number will be repeated two more times just like the initial 12. It will repeat this process for each code then flash 12 three times again to signify its done and you can turn off the key. remember every code is two numbers and only two numbers

Just look up your codes in a chiltons or haynes manual or look it up on here

just disconnect your battery for a couple minutes to reset the codes

hope this helps

Re: check engine light

Thanks i didn't know about checking for codes.
Do you know the code for temp warning, i don't have a chilton manual but i guess i better buy one.

How hard is it to replace the egr or oxygen sensor if it is that ?

Re: check engine light

I dont know the code off the top of my head Ill have to check my book later but you should buy one anyway its a cheap and good investment

not only will it tell you how to change out anything you need but it gives you important specs that you might need later

although this is in the book ill tell you now

egr valve means taking off the tpi plenum and undoing a sensor in the side of the egr valve so you can undo the two bolts holding it down then just install the new one

oxygen sensor might be a bit harder because they fit really tight... Ive always had to take a torch to the old one to heat it up and get a big ratchet and socket hooked up to it so you can pry it out and carefully put the new one in... you will need a socket you can fit the wire through so you dont damage it they sell special sockets for this or you can modify one...

both are simple fixes but im sure its just a coolant code ill try and post it on here soon

Re: check engine light

most common issues on these early ESC/ESt systems were bad 02 sensor or dirty EGR yeah

it still has the E4ME carb and EST style distributor on it right ?

elminate the basics like cap rotor and wires and plugs, if they are known to be old then i would go ahead and replace them.

also filters as well.

run the codes by jumping the two aforementioned ALDL connectors and see what code you get.

code 12 is normal and is just a check code.

any others will be a fault in a system.

look in a haynes manual or similar, or post the code(s) here

have fun!

Re: check engine light

Ok I think i counted right, had to watch it a couple times but it flashed 14.

high temp reading, the sensor in the front of the intake manifold is new replaced it a year ago because the prongs got broke off acccidently.
All the wires look good and attached, coolant level is slightly above add in the resovior and rad is filled to top, coolant is slightly green not dark or clear.
is this normal to get this light, never done it before.
I unhooked the battery to clear the alarm so i'll see what happens now.
anything else i should do ?
