Starter help

Hello to everyone
I recently had my original starter rebulid but as soon as I installed it, I had no problems at all. Then 3 days later after 10 min of use, my car won't start at all. I check the starter and it was burning hot. I put in some themo tape on the headers where the starter is to help with the heat but nothing helps. I took it to a mechanic and he is charging me $400 bucks to check it and put in a electrical booster (whatever that is)
So can anyone give me some advice on what to do, my dad wants me to get rid of my camaro but I don't want to.
Thanks

Re: Starter help

Try to find a factory service manual on e-bay and some friends that work on their own cars. Find another mechanic, you're being jerked around. He's probably just installing a relay near the starter to be able to supply more current to the starter solenoid when you turn the key. I just did this to my '66 GMC pickup because it wouldn't crank when the engine was warmed up good. The good news is that it solved the problem perfectly. The bad news (for your mechanic's integrity) is that it only cost $10 in materials and less than an hour to install. The root of your problem could be in the ignition switch.

Re: Starter help

By any chance do you where I can find those relay that give the starter the extra booster. Also when you buy it does it show how to install it or do you have to do some modification to install it

Re: Starter help

Here is the pre-packaged kit way to do it, but it costs more:
http://www.madelectrical.com/catalog/st-1.shtml
I wired mine up a slightly different way using a standard 30A automotive relay.

Re: Starter help

Thanks for the link to the starter relay kit.
Hopefully tomorrow I might find it in the autoparts that are near me.
I was reading on the link that you put on and the things that have as a problem to why the starter not starting up applies to me.
I hope this kit solves my problem, I don't want to get rid of my camaro

$400 thats rediculous. i would definately find a new mechanic. Personaly would have put a new starter in before paying $400 for a mechanic to check it out.

Re: Starter help

I was able to find the solenoid in a local Kragon Autopart that is near me. The good thing is that they have the part but the bad thing was i forgot my wallet at home. Hopefully today i will pass by again to get the part.
Also my father told me that he was going to help me out with the wiring.
Thanks for the help.
Also the mechanic that is charging me alot was saying the my car was going to be needing all of this extra crap to help it work better, which i believe is all a piece of s***.

Re: Starter help

Your car probably does need some things, but randomly replacing parts is a waste of money. You really need to go to www.moates.net and do some research. $80 spent there could save you many hundreds in unneeded parts replacement. Once you can see what the ECM is seeing, you can do allot less guessing as to what might be wrong when it's not running right.

does youre starter turn the engine over, or just dont work? if its not working, go get a new a/c delco starter now. and your woe days will be numbered. i guarantee it only 56 bucks. IF it the starter is working but the enigine doesnt run its the coil.

Re: Starter help

Today in the morning when I started my car up I had no problem at all. I went to the store and other place. After 30 min of driving I went back to my car to get ready to go home, as I started up my car up nothing happen. I checked if I had any voltage in the battery and everything checked out alrite. I checked my starter to see if it overheated again but it wasn't that hot at all. I waited for about 30 mintues to see if it cooled down more it mite start but it didn't. After the time pass I had to call a tow truck to get my car tow back home. As I got home I removal my starter and notice a little crack on my starter selonid.
Right now I took off my orignial starter and put in one I got from autozone (not the mini starter).
Any advice for me on what to do

I thought the rebuilding my original starter I won't have to worry anymore and leave the starter from autozone, but to my luck both starter are giving me problems.
By any chance transam85dudeman do you know where I can find a new a/c delco starter for a reasonable price.
Usually it suck to have a nice looking camaro and. Not use it because my starter either fails because of heat or cracks in the housing

Re: Starter help

maybe, i dont know i think i didnt use it or some crap, maybe its for the heat sheld. i had to take of the exhaust collectors to install it. but i wouldnt stress it. my starter came loose one time. a bolt vibrated itself out. it was gay. its nice a car. it handles better than my bmw and is even faster. but its loud and mean. through the years as you grow old, youll just want a simple quiet car with black tint and something inconspicuous. Trans am being flashy and all gets old. dont get me wrong. i still like driving it, but ill never sell the beast. its forever mine until I die. forever mine. i own the only car within 50 mile radius thats a trans amwww.free-tv-video-online.info <----second best site ever besides thirdgen.org

Re: Starter help

Okay today I sent the original starter back to tell them the problem with it and they said they will check it out. I went over to napa to check their starters out and they were the same size but the part where the gear come out in was a little bigger than the one I had, and the people at napa said that might be a problem for me or maybe not be a problem. The starter they sell at napa will run me about $79. So right now I am gonna wait to see what the people that fix my starter is gonna tell me. Hopefully they can fix it.
Will be updating on the things that happen

Re: Starter help

That price is without the core. And he said that it came with a lifetime warranty. I am gonna see what the people say about my original starter since it fail within less than a month. If I can't get my oe starter fix I am gonna get my starter at napa and see how does that work out. The thing that sucks not driving my camaro is that I have to drive my little bug project. Even though it is fast but is not compare to the power and noise that my camaro make.
Will keep updating
