Engine Break in Help!!
Engine Break in Help!!
Hello everyone. I have just put in a new camshaft and lifters by edelbrock. I also had the heads and intake manifold redone. I have heard that I should use a zinc oil. Is this true and if so what kind. I went to the local O'reily's and they did carry anything like that. They did give me a zinc additive and they said to just use a straight 30w oil with no other conditioners... Please help. I need this info so I can start this bad boy up..

Re: Engine Break in Help!!
If its a flat tappet hydraulic then youre going to need to keep the RPM's at around 1500 for the first 15 mins or so to break in the lobes on the cam. Roller cams are just start and go as they have next to no friction due to the roller tips on the lifters. I have used just straight 30 weight oil for break in. After the cam break in is done, change the oil again and youre good.

A diesel oil rated CI-4++/SL will have the necessary ZDDP. Straight weight isn't important.
What did you use for assembly lube on the cam lobes?

SH rated Mobil 1 "racing 4 T" 10w-40 has so much zinc it would be over kill to say the least.
GM E.O.S. Assy lube is what I use.
