I need some help. Recently my firebird has been cutting out. The first time was on the highway with the cruise on at 68mph. I had to turn off the cruise and feather the gas a little and it made it home fine. Next time it cut out under hard acceleration. Now its starting to cut out even at lower speeds. It hasnt stranded us yet but acts like it is going to.

Car has 53k miles with new fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap n rotor etc.
Even added a can of dry gas just to make sure there was no water in the fuel due to this winter weather we have been having. Car normally runs tight and strong with no issues until this.

Any suggestions?

Its a 305 v8 4bbl, 1987. 53k original miles.

I'm wondering if it could be the coil or ignition module. I looked under the dist cap and there is some currosion build up in the cap with only about 2k miles on cap and rotor which seems odd.

 

Replace the fuel filter to start may have picked up some trash. You can cut the old filter open to check for trash and rust.

 

Thanks, it already has a new fuel filter and pump also new cap, rotor, plugs and wires.

 

Update for anyone having a similar issue. Today i replaced the ignition module, coil, cap and rotor. What i found when i took off the ICM was that both of the plug terminals on the ICM were super dirty and corroded. The pins were actually green and brown like mold and would not wipe off completely. I actually had to scrub with sand paper and it still took quite a while to make the pins shine again. I highly suspect that those dirty connections were causing the problem.

Test drove the car and she is running excellent. Very smooth especially at idle when at the stop lights and such. If i had to do again i would just check and clean the connections on the ignition module as i really think that is all it was.

I will update again if there are any changes.
