Cutting the credit card key.

did anybody get the little plastic credit card with a key in it? if so do you know where I could get it cut? i just locked my keys in my car and had to deal with that whole spiel, but they're free now and I would really like to use the credit card key in case it happens again, or getting a spare is always an option but this thing is pretty cool.

Re: Cutting the credit card key.

Don't quote me on this but that looks like something you can only get from the Dealer. Have you tried calling a Dealer to see if they can get you one? I'd start with that.

An extra key is definitely something I need, my keys always fall out of my 5th pocket (wish I had six pockets) and hit the ground, and having only 1 VATS key scares me every time they fall.

How about getting something like this.

I don't like the magnetic ones, sort of get that feeling its no longer there.

Re: Cutting the credit card key.

Given that it doesn't have the chip in it and you have a 1991, it'll only serve to unlock the door - so there's no point having it cut for the ignition key.

I would think any locksmith could cut it for the door key.

Re: Cutting the credit card key.

The plastic key only does the door and trunk anyway. Ignition uses a square-head key. Never saw much point in the plastic key anyway- it's not any thinner than a metal one.

Unless the dealer will cut the plastic key for free (doubtful), get a real metal key cut by them (they can do it for you sight-unseen if you supply the vin and title, proving ownership). I forget what it cost, but $20 comes to mind. Worthwhile investment since it will be a NEW key, cut to factory spec, not copied from a worn-out original.

Don't forget the lock mechanism is old (and may be worn as well). I've seen instances where a fresh key cut doesn't work, but a copy of the old key works. Eitherway, any home depot or lowes will copy a key for a few bux

Re: Cutting the credit card key.

Worked in a dealership for 6 years and never cut a GM plastic key. We also sold Toyota and they also have credit card keys and required a special cutter. Allthough I think the modules from our main cutter would have fit in that machine so we could have cut the GM keys also. We could only cut the credit car keys off of an exsisting key. The cutter for the credit card keys had a finer cutting wheel but I don't see why a regular cutter wouldn't work. BTW, Toyota required us to cut the credit card keys free of charge. The only time I would charge a fee was if we had to cut a key from the VIN, GM started requiring that we keep documentation on every key we cut from the VIN and it was just a bit of paperwork but was a total PITA.
