305 L69 or LG4?

Ok, try not to flame me to bad.

I have a 83 camaro 5.0. I'm trying to figure out if it's the HO or not.

Simple answer check the vin....well the windshield vin plate is rusted and you can't see it, door sticker is not visible, meaning you can't see vin. When I brought it from US to Can because of this Vin problem I had to register with the DMV here and they issued a new vin number, which matches in no way to the correct format. They had to take the previous title and issue a new one with the new vin

all this being said I can't look at the 8th digit for the engine code.
Where exactly can the engine code be located. Is there anything defining on the motor or about the carb that I would be able to tell. The engine compartment is completely stock, EGR system in place and everything.

There is a stamp on the Top of the Rad support, but I didn't see either of the corresponding codes there and I'm not sure how to interpret it.

any thoughts?

I may be wrong, but isnt there an rpo code in the glove box in the hatch? also it could be stamped onto the block, im not sure though.

Re: 305 L69 or LG4?

I believe the HO cars had better exhaust manifolds than the regular LG4 models, which means there should be a visible difference between the two. I could be wrong though, and the only way to check is to find pics of the two.

Also, if the engine is completely stock, then the L69 would have a dual snorkel air intake, which imo would be the easiest way to tell them apart. And as Ilike2stroke383 said, there should be an RPO sticker on the underside of the glove box lid. The engine code will be stated there.

Following, in post #7, is a pic of the L69 dual snorkel set-up, the L69's most distinguishing feature:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...e-85-iroc.html

The set-up above is on an LG4. Take note of the AC lines. If yours are similar, the car's an LG4 (The L69 lines wouldn't be seen as they dip down at the dryer). Also, IIRC, the L69 is equipped with an electric fan.

So, which do you have???

The tuning sticker under the hood may also give a hint. LG4 timing was 0 degrees, L69 6 degrees.

Re: 305 L69 or LG4?

Going by the air cleaner is silly because it's so easily swapped. L69s had ESC, while LG4s did not. This is a visible clue if it's there.

'85-'87 LG4's did have ESC, so need to be careful there (although '86 L69's were rare, and there were no L69's in '87).

No, the L69 could have the 700R-4.

IIRC (and I may not), 84 was the only year for the L69 and an auto. I'd think a manual was available on all 305's, HO or not.

Re: 305 L69 or LG4?

Some few years ago, I bought a totalled low-mileage, garage kept, one owner, numbers-matching '83.5 Trans Am, as a parts car, for $500 cash. It was a 700R-4. I took the engine, trans, rear, steering, & brakes, but the dual-snorkel was ruined when the car was totalled.
And the T5 was available with the LG4 in '83-'87
