2.8 problem
Well, I have a 86 2.8 and my problem is that I am planning to rebuild the motor but I have one issue that I cannot for the life of me figure out and I would like to figure it out before I rebuild the motor.
The problem is that the car will suddenly die like not chug chug chug deadf but it will just all of the sudden die instantly no hesitation just shuts off, I have been told it could be a faulty ignition pickup coil? does that sound right? This bit of advise is coming from the shop that told me my headgasket was shot when i had a plugged up radiator. other than that there is just a slight tick from a loose rocker. Somebody please help i am lost..

correction: truest. That's the truest advice you've ever heard. You generally don't get dumb advice from people who have been tested and proven to qualify as geniuses. If you don't like my advice, that's your prerogative. But that doesn't make it any less true.
Nearly all V6 owners are just waiting for the v6 to die, giving them a good excuse to step up. Usually it happens just when the finances are all wrong.
If the OP is truly happy with the V6, which I cannot believe, then I apologize to the OP for unhelpful input. You sir, contributed even less by attacking me than I did with my first post in this thread.

Re: 2.8 problem
this car probably isn't dying, it's got a stalling problem. It may be an ignition module or three dozen other simple fixes.
I stand by what I said. People who take every opportunity to bash v6's are dumb. The OP didn't ask if it's worth it to upgrade to a 350, he asked how to fix a problem with his V6.
if you're a genius, I'm santa claus. and I hate cold weather too much to be santa claus.

Re: 2.8 problem
Yes the car will start right away and the problem seems somewhat intermittent, as for swapping to a v8, that is not an option for me I prefer the mileage of the v6 to the v8 and I do plan on building up my motor during the rebuild process, I just want to do my trouble shooting before I rebuild it so my trouble shooting has no effect on me properly breaking it in when I rebuild it. And as far as its stalling issue it runs strong even though it has no reverse or first gear right now it drive good except for the stalling. just that it dies instantly then will start again right away

Re: 2.8 problem
two things come to mind...
the coil and the ignition module
and I think somebody owes both of us an apology

Re: 2.8 problem
Well in my hunting for a solution I have discovered that three of the four wires running to the coil have been stripped of there casing and then very loosely given a single wrap of electrical tape, as for coils can I swap in a astro 4.3 coil to test with they look identical but as everyone knows looks can be decieving
Re: 2.8 problem
When the car dies are you hitting the brake pedal?? because I have the same car and I have a vacuum leak and every time i hit my brakes the car would die no sputter or anything, I found that it was the four vacuum lines at the left front of the motor the connector was broken

Re: 2.8 problem
both very good possibilities, I will have to check vacuum lines and resolder the wires for the coil and seal them up tight with liquid tape and electrical tape, still wondering about the coil from a 1992 astro working for the camaro though?? Also how the heck do you get the screw closest to the firewall out of the distributor I cannot seem to find a screw driver or nut driver that will get down there
Also yes i usually am hitting the brakes but it has done it once or twice while just putting along at around twenty or so

Re: 2.8 problem
I wish I had some extra parts to help you out but the best I can do is send you to www.car-part.com you should be able to find it all there
Re: 2.8 problem
I have the same car, same engine, I have had the same problem as long as I have had the car, just dies from time to time, I replaced the ignition control module and since it has happened only once since then, that was a year ago

Re: 2.8 problem
well, my problem is fairly frequent I cant go for more then a mile or so without restarting it, it seems to go away a little after the car is warm though it made a 100 mile drive the day I got it with only a couple stalls in the beginning

Also what exactly is the little black ball thing about 6 or 7 inches in diameter on the drivers side in the fender?
Another thing, I have all the components for cruise control except the column switch so what is the best way to eliminate it all together I will never use it even if it worked/had the switch

Re: 2.8 problem
that ball is the vacuum canister. it should have vacuum lines running to it
do you have a service manual? sounds like that and an assembly manual are something you would get a gret deal of use out of
