Key stuck in ignition.

Ok here is the story...

After the car had sat for winter I went and tried to start it all it did was crank and try to start. Tried this tried that, kept trying to start it then went on a starting rampage. I kept trying to turn it over again and again, it almost fired once and I got excited pulled the key back pushed it once more and still nothing so tried turning key back wouldnt budge. Now the key only goes between the ON and Start position.

Possible problem I think it could be...
Screwed up my ignition cylinder somehow.

I heard that it might be because the trans isnt fully in park but I tried setting it into all gears and jamming it into park, etc and still cant get it out.

Any ideas?

I think "rampage" says it all. Everyone wants to use a hammer when a feather is what is needed.

Are you saying that the key wont come out of the cylinder or you can get the key out, but the cylinder only goes between ON and START?

if the key wont come out of the ignition, most likely it is your ignition lock cylinder. you will have to remove the steering wheel and get to the cylinder and replace it.

If I do replace it what is the process of getting a new key to work with a new cylinder? I still have vats.

Re: Key stuck in ignition.

not sure, but I know if you still have VATS, you will need to know the resistance of the chip in the key. Don't think those keys are available outside of a dealership or on ebay motors. Just guessing here, but perhaps a new cylinder can have the old VATS installed in it or on it and then it's a non issue. Have you tried graphite or even a shot of WD40 in the keyway or around teh cylinder to see if that frees it up? Not a real expert on VATS, sorry.

Re: Key stuck in ignition.

They are available on ebay. i actually just went to my local locksmith and they had the keys and figured out the resistance and made a new key for the new cylinder.

Re: Key stuck in ignition.

Just about any locksmith has VATS keys, also most all ACE Hardware stores, and I'm guessing True Value (since they directly compete).

Re: Key stuck in ignition.

Just a foot note to this discussion. I had a pickup truck that needed a new key cylinder years ago, (same setup as a Camaro third gen) and the guy who replaced it told me to not have a bunch of keys or heavy key chain accessories hanging down. That is what can accelerate the cylinder to go bad.
